wondering if the quiet close hardware can be added by home owner at later date or should they be put on custom cabinets

My DH added Blumotion soft close on cabinets doors and drawers after installing the cabinets. We ordered them from AH Turf on the web.

I think it is very easy to add to cabinet doors later- my cabinet guy did it after the kitchen was installed. My understanding is that some of the products may require a bit more planning to add to drawers- some require a certain amount of space within the drawer box. The manufacturers' websites should give you an idea if you have enough space. BTW- soft close on doors is easy, not expensive & IMO a "must" for a new kitchen. Good luck.

Our kitchen mfg provided full extension but could not provide soft close and our KD never even heard of it! We found out about it on GW! So after cabinet installation, my DH bought the hardware at IKEA and easily installed them.

we added the Hettich soft close hinges for the doors (missed this one in the cabinet contract - rats!) after install. The drawers were already done with soft close. We had our cabinet guy install it though, so I'm not sure about ease or DIY, but it obviously can be done later.

BTW - another thumbs up for the soft close doors - I LOVE it!!!

Full-extension/soft-close drawers were standard with our cabinets (Omega Dynasty/Embassy) but soft-close for cabinet doors was not. Rather than pay the upcharge for the doors ($50/cabinet, I think) for the soft-close, we ordered the dampers separately & installed them ourselves. It cost us $3.98/door + S&H...much cheaper than $50/door!

So, in answer to your question, yes, you can easily install soft-close for doors after the fact. However, for drawers it's not so easy. I think you have to actually replace all the drawer glides. I'm not an expert, but this has been discussed b/f and the consensus was that if you have drawers that meet the exacting specs for one of the manufacturers you can replace the glides, but if you don't you may not be able to.
