The overall height of the lamp that works best for you will be different depending on your height, the type of lamp, and the size and shape of the shade. I think lamps where the bottom of the shade comes to the top of the shoulder when you are sitting up in bed work the best for me. If you can find a lamp that is in the shape of a reading or desk light, you might find that even more efficient. Try one to see if the light falls on the surface of your book when you are in the position you like to use while reading in bed.

I have full sized living room lamps on each bedside table but the tables are substantial. If the tables are small, buffet lamps or apothecary lamps might work for you.

My night tables are substantial,and there are a couple of living room lamps out in the garage that I will test. Hadn't thought about trying those to find out a good size. With these two tips, I believe we can find the correct size.
