Paint colors - round two

I decided all the colors I tried first were too dark, so this time I went lighter. I tried Providence Olive (left) and Northampton Putty (right). I would love to use NP somewhere else in my house, but it definitely doesn't look good here.

{{!gwi}}

{{!gwi}}

and I wanted to post Earthenware for Ree. Once again, I love the color, just not here.

My next plan of action is to try a medium neutral. I'm thinking of Woodstock Tan, but I have to wait until DH goes out of town because he's starting to question how much I'm spending on all these paint samples :)

Hiya. My opinion on this is - That there is a slight pinkish tone in the wood (at least on my monitor) and the colors are too gray in comparison.

Just my opinion... probably not worth a dime! lol.

you're exactly right and that is what's causing me so much trouble. Every green I've tried looks gray or blue, so I'm giving up and moving on to the neutrals, just not sure which neutrals.

Try to find a color that matches the background color of the paneling before the aging was added. See the color right below the top edge on the last picture? Start with that.

So are you keeping the paneling color then?

Too taupish and too gray. IMO Too cool next to your warm paneling & the warm wood tone of your furniture.

If you are going w/ a neutral - you need something in the same tonal family as the paneling. Something warm w/ not a lot of gray and not too yellow. I think beige or limestone or travertine color would be more the ticket.

I still think you should go green. Really. It would set off your paneling beautiful. An aged silk kinda green.

My old house has cabinets painted & glaze exactly the same color as yours and the walls were green.

Yes, that is the exact green in my house and that's what I was thinking too for that room.

msrose, I came across this photo and it reminded me of your paneling. The paint pictured on the wall is RL Sisal NA10.

Have you you removed a door or shelf from your glazed unit & taken it to a Paint store that has a designer or colorist to help in the selection of the base color? I know the lighting will be different then in your home which will affect the color. Any leftover paint from the panel painting & glazing? That formula should help in a base color. Get the base formula correct , then you (the paint store) can tweak it from there.
msrose- this would be making be crazy!! Your hubby has a point - you could probably pay someone for their expertise in color - in your home - for what you are spending on samples.
You have a lovely home, and very pretty furnishings, but the color just isn't right - I understand your dilemma - getting the base or background color as Les suggested is what I think you should strive to achieve to get a harmonious, soothing tone on your walls.

Great advice from the last follow up. I was going to say something similar; time for professional help! I wonder if Ellen Kennon could give you her two cents on this one. I have not used her paints but others have with great success and she will give you a personal consultation. I keep looking at my Edgewood Green sample and think it may be your answer. On her website she calls it the perfect neutral, and I can see why after trying it in a couple of places in my house. It seems to adapt to whatever it is surrounded with, and yet is still a definite color, which seems like what you are going for.

I was hoping you'd choose green over tans. I stressed too on my living room color and finally settled on BM Old Salem Gray. I also like the RL Sisal NA10 paint from the photo posted. I have no idea what color it is..do we see green in it?? Have you tried some of the tan that look green shades??

Hi - I feel your pain. I would try to get a sample of the RL Sisal that kcmg posted. That photo looks really nice. I would also try what magothyriver suggested - try to get the right base paint color. Sorry you are having so much trouble. Hopefully you are getting cloer.

Gosh Laurie, this sure has been a tough one for you. I'm so sorry it's giving you such a headache.

I don't think I like any of the new colors you sampled..sorry! But I do love kmc's picture above. It seems like a nice inbetween color. Tan with a little green undertones.

    Good Luck!

les - I think you're seeing the glaze color. The paneling was bright white before the glaze was added. That's probably what you're saying I should match though.

squirrel - I have to keep it for now. I really thought I could come up with a green that I liked that would work with the paneling and then if I decided to change the paneling later on, it wouldn't be a big deal.

I've held greens up there that look more olive and they always take on a blue tone. That side of the room faces the north so I don't know if that has something to do with it or not. I can hold the same sample up on the other side of the room (south side) and it looks completely
    different.

bellaflora - Do you know what green that is?

kmcg - That's so funny because I came across a picture last night that's really similar to that one.
    {{!gwi}}

That's what made me think that I might should just stick to a neutral. The only thing is I don't know if I can find a colorthat doesn't have the fleshy tone that will look good with the paneling. Is RL Sisal NA10 the company or the paint color? I'm not familiar with that one.

magothyrivergirl - The people at our local BM and SW haven't been very helpful at all. I haven't taken a shelf in for that reason. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try though. The painter used white on the paneling and then did his own mixture of the glaze, so I don't really have anything to go by on that. I honestly have not been able to find anyone to help me professionally. Out of desperation, I contacted a decorator I found in the phone book. She said she could come look if I wanted her to, but the paint stores are really better at that thing. I didn't want to pay for her servies when she didn't sound that positive about doing it. I asked SW and they told me they had a wall of business cards I could look at. I found another decorator's name, but I know nothing about her.

sewwhatsnew - I've been looking for colors that are between a tan and green and they just look completely different on that wall. I even changed my lightbulbs the other day, because we had fluorescent ones and I thought that may be affecting the color, but no such luck.

Lindy - Don't be sorry, I don't like any of them either.

Do you have any locally, independently owned Paint stores or paint departments in hardware stores in your area that may employ designers to help with choosing colors? I think Faron is in an Ace Hardware that has design help.We have a Pittsburgh Paints, locally owned, that has in house designers. I agree calling a decorator may not be the best choice if he/she doesn't have the color expertise you need.
GE Reveal ligtbulbs - they are blue - are great for truer color.
Have you considered a soft white that won't compete with the antiquing and the bold colors in your sofa & mats?

Laurie, RL Sisal is from Ralph Lauren and you could probably find it at Home Depot. I think it's really worth a try...I like that color alot and it seems to have the right mix of tan and green for you.

A little warning about neutrals. They aren't! :-)

I searched for a camel color for my LR and it was the toughest paint pick in the whole house. I think I sampled 15-20 colors. It was not pretty!

    Good luck.

I'm with Bella, btw. That green is very beautiful...

msrose!! YES! That Ballard picture works!!! I think with all the hues you've painted so far that their deeper tone is really making the orangey color in your paneling stand out...I think if you go much lighter like in the Ballard picture and stick with lighter creams you'll find that it allows the paneling to blend well and offsets the orangish hue...also changing the type of bulbs you use can help as well...I notice there's a HUGE difference between compact flourescents, incandescents and even the reveal or halogen bulbs...

We all can't wait till the day comes and you are bursting at the seams to show us the color you decided on!!! :)

I know this is going way off on the other end...but have a look at some of these
Benjamin Moore Carrington Beige, Putnam Ivory or Shaker Beige...

    Keep up the hard work!
    Tara

okay, I'm starting to feel hopeful again! I'm going to try some beiges. It just seems so boring though.
Tara - I'll have to check to make sure, but I don't think I've tried any of the ones you mentioned. I don't know if anyone has the Potterybarn Fall 2007 fandeck, but there's one in there called Squire Hill Buff 1068 that looks like it could work also. I've never put pictures on the wall of my entryway because it's so small, but if I do end up going with a beige on the wall, should I put something there to add a little color?

Laurie, Lindy is right, it is Ralph Lauren paint from Home Depot. They sell the little sample pouches. I bought one myself and painted it on a sample board. I have linked to another picture of the Sisal for you. It is on the Thomasville Lighting website. It is a neat site because it also lists the products used in their photo's such as paint etc.. Fun to take a look at. Lots of familiar paint names in the different rooms.

Here is a link that might be useful: Thomasville Lighting

kmcg - thanks for the link. I ended up looking at the whole site just to check out all the paint colors.

I stopped by Home Depot on my way home tonight and picked up a sample card of RL Sisal and unfortunately it takes on a bluish gray tone like so many of the other colors I've tried.

As soon as DH goes out of town, I'll start painting again, so I'll let y'all know how the beiges turn out. That still seems so boring, but I'm not sure what else to do at this point.

    Laurie

Well darn...I thought for sure that Sisal was going to be a winner for you. Beige isn't boring, if it's the right one. Good Luck!

    Hi Laurie
geezz..I feel your pain! I am so sorry you are having a hard time..it will get better. Your right..I don't like the Earthenware in there..but I really like the ballard color..I think that is your best bet..I know you have many votes for green, but I like the light tan tones. . Here's two pictures of Putnam Ivory (BM) I hope this can help... hang in there Laurie!! Ree

    Laurie,
I'm just catching up on the paint marathon...Did I see SW Fenland in your sample cards? I may be the minority here but I still believe a green would tone down the peach and work with the furniture. I know it's frustrating (I just built and you wouldn't believe the sample pots!) but you will get it. BTW, I'm in TX and willing to help paint but I think we are probably 4 hours apart.

Thanks for the pictures, Ree. The 1st one looks a little more fleshy toned and the 2nd one looks a little yellow. What color is it IRL?

txgal - I found my Fenland sample card and it looks bluish gray:( Where in Texas are you?

    Laurie

    Laurie
IRL, I think it looks more like the first picture. The second, no natural light in there and the lights were on.. In the first picture, you can see the bath room again, and it looks darker with out any light. I think New Home builder has this color in her house..maybe take a peek at some of her photo's...( I think it's in her bath room also)In my mom's house it has a slight green cast to it..

I feel for you and wish I can help more! Are you leaning back to green? Ree

Well, I've decided to try a few more samples before I resort to the lighter colors. I'm going to try BM Woodstock Tan, which I'm really not sure if it's going to look tan or green. I'm also thinking of trying SW Burlap or Artifact, which also looks tannish green, until I put it on the wall, of course, and then it will probably turn a completely different color :)

    Laurie

MsRose, of course you should try anything you like, but I just looked at Artifact and Burlap on my fan deck. They are very gold-green colors - nothing like the peachy tone in the paneling and nothing like the deep forest greens in the LR. I don't see how those would work.

It is really hard to judge colors on a monitor, but here are some thoughts I had from looking at my fan deck and your pix posted here.

For a green, I am thinking perhaps SW 6192 Coastal Plain or 6193 Privilege Green.

Looking for a pale neutral, maybe one of these, all SW:

    6049 Gorgeous White
    6056 Polite White

    6329 Faint Coral
    6336 Nearly Peach
    6343 Alluring White
    6350 Intricate Ivory
    6630 Posy

The neutrals will allow you to then use artwork and accessories to bring in the colors from the LR, as I mentioned in another thread.

Thank you, les! I'll take a look at those. I wish I had read your post a little earlier. I just got back from SW and picked up a sample of the Burlap. I haven't even tried it yet, but I already don't think it's going to work. Did you look at the BM Woodstock Tan by chance?

    Laurie,
I had a response all typed out on your other thread....
I am sorry you are having such a time with your paint color.

I am going to just throw something out here....I know you spent alot of $$ getting your paneling painted. But it seems like you are trying to work around something you don't truly love. Have you considered getting a "color expert - expert painter" to come analyze your paneling?? Your local paint stores might know of someone (I bet they are getting to know you well!!) There might be something easy and less$$ to do your paneling to take the pink/orange tone out.

Your room is really nice - your sofas are rich and inviting.

If not, I would look at SW Moselle. It takes on the tone as the picture that kmcg posted with the glazed mantel. Kinda neutral but still slightly green.

Please don't hate me....I am just throwing out my thoughts for what they are worth!! Nothing!!

    SMiles:)

I have Fenland in my kitchen and breakfast room and I don't see bluish gray. I thought, "oh no!" as it was going on but it is fine with two coats dry. I have a pic if you want to see it but I don't know how well the color shows up.

    Southeast Texas.

My 2 cents here - If you are going to keep the paneling the color it is, then I think Les' pale neutral option is the way to go. I also have a SW paint fan deck, and of the neutrals Les mentioned, the last three really seem like they would work great (or something like them, due to monitor differences to real life). Alluring White, Intricate Ivory, or Posy. Then the wall color won't be fighting with the paneling color, and your beautiful furniture will have a wonderful backdrop. I know you're stressed, but you have a lovely home, great furniture, and a great space. The paneling adds lots of warm character, and I think all of your hard work will pay off. Can't wait to see what you decide.

    Jan

Thanks, everyone. I don't have a SW fandeck so I need to go back and pick up some of the colors y'all mentioned.

johnatemp - Once I decide on a color, I'm going to have someone give me an estimate and I figured while they're here, I'll ask about the paneling. I don't think there's any way I can afford to change it, but it won't hurt to ask.

txgal - I'd love to see your picture.

    Jan - I also can't wait to see what I decide :)

As much paint as you're buying, ask for the paint fan deck free!

Here are a couple of pics of Fenland.

Those Fenland shots are wonderful in your rooms, Txgal!

Laurie, my favorite suggestion here of everything I've read and even thought of myself, is the one from Magothyrivergirl......take a door off it's hinges, go to the Ben Moore store or some other paint place that has a knowledgeable person, and let them make some suggestions for you from that. I know it's the paneling that's creating the problem, but you have it, it's painted, and you need to find a work around. Grab a door and carry it with you. Seriously.

The other thing that I think is happening here.......Sometimes when we splotch..........yes, sometimes even when the splotches are big and near a wall color they have to blend with or a piece of furniture they need to provide background for..........they just don't tell the whole story. The Northampton Putty (that doesn't look right with your stuff, I agree) did not look green AT ALL when I did my big splotches. Once it was Everywhere, I could see the slight olive tones to it. In the can it looked tan. So if you can find a color that looks good with your door or drawer front, maybe you just need to Paint. Really Paint.

    txgal06:

Loved the pics of Fenland, especially the dining room. DO you know what color are the trims, baseboards?

I'm trying to decide between white and swiss coffee for my shutters, baseboards, trims, etc?

    Hi Laurie
How are you doing? Have you made a decision yet? Hope so!!!..keep us posted Ree

I wish I could say that I had, but I haven't. I was going to paint some more samples on the wall this week, plus work on painting my bathroom cabinets. Well, I got most of the cabinets sanded and then I found out I have a chance to get a job at the hospital I'm currently doing my clinical at for school. The only thing is I have to pass a test, so I've dropped all my painting projects for now so that I can study. I was going to get all this painting done while DH was out of town and it looks like he may come home to a big mess :)
