I have built two homes...my experience has been that the painting and staining was the last thing done. I think that as they continue to work on your home they will ding the walls here and there as they manipulate and place the various materials. That means there would be painting touch up to be done later . It is easier to save the painting for the end. Sometimes steps may get juggled out of order a little bit in order to keep a project on schedule or if a certain sub-contractor is available unexpectedly they may take advantage of that opportunity. It would depend on the finish for the crown moulding, baseboards and trim? If they are being painted the same color as the walls etc and everything is being sprayed you would want all the trim up. However it appears the walls in these photos have not been primed yet? Typically you would want to sand and prime the bare drywall and mud seams before any trim is put up.

The cabinets and mirror trim will be painted and everything else stained. But of course the walls and painted cabinets won't be the same color. No, nothing has been primed. Funny enough- the "contractor" is also the painter...and I just don't think he was ready-to-go.

The cabinets and mirror trim can be sprayed in place and the wall color can then be cut in to the trim, which is a more efficient way of painting. With respect to the trim I would stain it before putting it up, at the very least have the walls pre-painted that way if any stain gets onto the wall it can be easily washed off, it will soak in to the drywall otherwise and bleed through the paint after.

You paint your walls before trim is put on. You paint or stain your trim then put it on. Your cabinets or mirrors are painted or stained or come already finished before being put up. Once everything is installed you go back and do touch up. You don't install cabinets and trim first and have to cut in. That would take too much time and too much chance for error. I have built two homes and my family has built many homes so this is my humble opinion.
