layout and fridge

We are not ready to redo our kitchen but our fridge is old. We have the opportunity to buy one at a discounted rate because someone is moving in and is bringing their own fridge. The new fridge is wider and a little taller than our current fridge. It is taller than the space we have with our cabinet there. The fridge is only $600 and it retails for about 1500. It is bottom mount freezer stainless steel.

here is a pic of our current area with the fridge. We have a large open wall with no cabinets that is also available. But I don't want it to look dumb with just a fridge on that wall - additionally what the heck do I do with with the area where the current fridge is.

This is the empty wall. This is an old pic. Walls are brown and there is an old pine sofa table that collects junk on that wall right now. Dog dishes and food underneath. Wow.. this one is still our original floor too.

This is a diagram of the kitchen itself. Not quite to scale but a good idea. This was done sooo long ago so please ignore the comments and other things. Just wanted you to see what the current kitchen looks like.

I don't want to spend a lot on a kitchen that NEEDS to be redone. With 2 new little ones under 3 and daycare costs - it is not something we can do at this time.

Do you have any ideas on what we can do?

How about just taking out the small cabinets above the fridge and putting the new one there?

Removing the upper is a great idea, but since the new fridge is wider (probably 36" instead of, I'm guessing 30"), and you're right next to a door, I don't know that that will work.

You could put the new fridge on the new wall and put standard 30" upper and 30" base next to it. If you buy slab cabinets from Barker Cabinet, assemble and paint them yourselves it'll cost about $490 plus shipping. It's a great deal, and you can buy a cabinet for over the fridge as well, but I'm not sure that fits into your budget. One nice thing about doing this is that if you eventually choose a different door style for the kitchen, you just buy new doors, the cabinets are still good quality. It's not exactly a pantry, but it's really nice to have counter space next to the fridge.

The tall cabinet you have on that wall that has the glass front - how deep is that? Is that a china cabinet? It could make a great pantry cabinet, right next to the new fridge on that wall. Then you don't really have to buy anything new.

As for what to do with the empty space from the old fridge you can buy a 30" base cabinet from Barker, or on Craig's list that fits the lower space and top it with butcher block for a chopping zone, then put open shelving under the upper that ends where the rest of the uppers end - just an ordinary white shelf, nothing fancy. The new cab doesn't even have to have the same door style - if you paint it white it'll be fine. Don't worry about backsplash, just paint the wall the same color as your existing backsplash in a scrubbable paint finish.

Hmmm... or just put the water cooler in the empty fridge space with a couple of shelves above. Even more economical!
