Laying out a tile backsplash?

So the granite is in:) now onto the backsplash.

We are using a 3x6 travertine tile in a running bond

pattern. We also want a strip of 3x 1" accent

glass tiles around the room. The backsplash area ranges

from 18" to 18 1/4" around the room which is in a U shape.

The center of the outlets is at 9" exactly. We would

like the accent strip to be centered on the outlets

around the room. I am going to use an 1/8" grout

joint with sanded grout. The range area will have a sheet

of stainless steel for the backsplash.

Any resources or suggestions on how to lay it out?

Ideally I'd like to minimize cuts.

How do I handle inside corners? Put a 45 deg angle on the

edge of each tile? How about glass tile?

Where do you start laying tile out with a U shape

kitchen? The left side has the range in the middle,

the middle has a sink with a window behind it in the middle

and the right side is just a counter.

Thanks DIY_Mike

Start with a full tile at the counter. That'll have you taking 1 3/8" off at the top, which is fine-- with that big a cut on top (which no one would ever see anyway, you'll never see the difference in height).

As for the corners, cut them straight, and butt the next wall up to the one you just completed. Don't worry about "bending" the cuts. In other words, if you end up with a 4" cut on the one wall, that doesn't mean you have to start with a two inch cut on the next. Lay out each wall individually for the best cuts to each wall.

Now, unless you have a feature or accent going over the range, that has no bearing on your layout. The window is a different story. Tell me what the exact dimension is on the length of your tile (could be anything from 5 3/4- 6 1/4"), and give me the dimensions on that wall with the window in it, starting from the left corner, to the left side of the window, to the right side of the window, and to the right corner.

    Thanks for the response Bill.

The tile is 5 7/8" wide by 2 15/16" They are all the same.

The wall to left side of window is 28 1/4"
The window is 41 1/4" (left to right)
The right side of window to wall is 65 1/2"
The counter to window bottom is 6 1/2"

How about lining the accent strip up to be even
with the middle of the outlets. I assume I would
have a smaller piece near the counter. Is that wierd?
    How is it normally done?

If you start full and half tiles at the left side of that wall, your window will be almost perfectly centered in the layout of the tile. On the left side of the window, you should have pieces 4 1/4 and 1 1/4, and on the right side, you should have pieces 4 1/2 and 1 1/2. In the far right corner you should have just about full and half tiles again.

About the easiest layout I've run into!! LOL

As for under the window, I'm assuming that 6 1/2" measurement is up to the apron trim under the window sill? If so, how big is that apron, from top to bottom?

Concerning the accent, I'd place it between the 3rd and 4th rows from the bottom (if you want it centered) or between the 4th and 5th rows (if you want it just a bit higher than center).

Okay.. so now I am thinking about adding a pencil tile
border on the top and bottom to the 3x 1" tile high mosaic
just to set it off more and add some dimension to the
    backsplash.

What do you do with pencil tile when it intersects an
outlet? Or you just do that sort of thing near an outlet?

    Thanks,

You don't want to run pencil trim into an outlet or switch cover. You'll end up with gaps behind the cover plate, and it'll look like crap. If this is what you're going to do, you want to make sure the listello completely misses the cover plates.
