Soapstone does contain magnetite and iron, but all that I have read says it is not enough to make it magnetic. See, that's why you can't always believe everything you read on the internet!! :)

I've been tellin' ya all along that my Alberene stone was really, _really_ hard, now you believe me when I say it wears like iron, literally.

Sadly Gardenweb ate the post I started on this about 6 months ago! A few of us have soapstone that magnets will react to and I am so pleased to be one of them!!!

It hasn't done me any good yet though....

I just had a magnet stick to one of the veins but not the majority of my counter - does that makes sense? I have no idea what kind of soapstone we have - it was called silver.

I just searched for this topic because I just accidentally discovered the same thing! Our strong magnet sticks all over our soapstone countertops, not just in the veining. We have "Anastasia" soapstone?

I was just reading about soapstone and came upon this thread. Of course, I tried the magnet on my “fantasy” species installed last month. Who would have thought?! I immediately asked my wife to hurry into the kitchen - she’s not as impressed ☹️. It definitely has stronger pull in some areas but I haven’t noticed a pattern. It’s good to be excited about such trivial matters!

Just found out my Brazilian soapstone counter is magnetic. Put a magnetic tool on counter and it stuck. Never knew!

Just found this out as well. Don’t remember the name of the variety I have but definitely has some iron content as I noted the reaction of a magnet
