Initial Kitchen Layout FINALLY!

It may take me a few tries. I finally figured out how to convert the pdf from my architect into a jpg!!!!

What you are seeing is just an initial layout that my architect prepared for Henrybuilt. So while the locations of the appliances will probably stay the same there will be lots of changes to the cabinet and counter layout. Our biggest challenge is to figure out how to get the eat in counter to relate to the rest of the room (the kitchen is at one end of a dining/living L shaped room that is about 700 sq. ft. total).

I made more room in the galley kitchen by moving the fridge/freezer columns into the entryway - what do people think about how I should configure the hinges on the doors? Should they both hinge on the left? This way they will both open to the kitchen.

looking forward to getting some feedback.

sadie

btw - they are currently painting everything in site in my apt. with mold resistant paint. walls, floors, ceilings, everything. I will get some pictures of THAT tomorrow....

After demo:

this pic shows the entry way - the fridge and freezer will be in the closets closest to the kitchen

are you going to have upper cabs over the peninsula?

I'd have the fridge and freezer open toward the kitchen...

without a layout showing the other room(s) we can't see how the counter relates to it...

Yes -- both hinges on the left. Looks like you're doing a great job of finding every possible inch of storage.

Is that my favorite Stages sink I see on your plan?

Here is a pic of the "dining" side of the room. Just so you know I am taking the picture while standing in the "living" part of the L. Right now the thought is to try to build the counter into the kitchen wall so that it doesn't stick out (or not much). I have this dream of having the counter wrap around somehow so that one could sit at the window and eat breakfast while looking out. The dining table will be in front of the two windows to the right in the picture.

hope this helps...it was taken before the demo (obviously)

so excited for you. i agree...have your fridge and freezer open to your kitchen. you have a great dining space there. what are you doing with the floors?

We just ordered the floors. 5 inch wide plank white maple (tung oil finish) from Carlisle.

I'll put a link to a picture on their website below:

    oooh...lovely flooring!

desertsteph: yes cabinets will be above sink.

eastbaymom: yes! With the Karbon faucet no less!

also - planning on using the a walnut panel (matching the wall with the fridge/freezer) on the wall UNDER the eat-in counter. This way will avoid dirty marks on wall from feet.

regarding eat-in counter. If it ends up sticking out a lot I think it would be better to have quite a large counter - otherwise I think it might look funny just sticking out in the middle of the wall????? One issue then is if we have the large counter at 42" it will be above the window sill....so then we would need to keep it at 36" (though DH wants it at 42")

I am hoping we can keep the profile close to the wall and not sticking out. Though I guess I'd still love an eat-in nook at the window too......

    so many questions!!!!!

here is the counter material - just waiting for the marble to clear customs before picking out my slabs

here is a drawing of the wall with eat-in counter. At the time he was thinking we'd do walnut above the counter as well as under but we decided: too much walnut.

I love symmetry but since it is not a featured elevation, I wonder if you could get this to be more of a 1.5 person kitchen if you shifted the range a bit toward the corner so you weren't directly back to back with the sink.

It sounds like the aesthetic is going to be great. On one job where the counter was tucked between two walls like yours I ran the flooring up the back under the counter, a similar solution to yours. (And a reduction in# of materials). I think you can get away with a relatively shallow ledge there if you want that esthetically, if you are going to sit for quick meals and don't mind sitting at a slight angle. It may not be deep enough to sit for long meals.

palimpsest: you're a genius. Time to recruit DD and DS to work with me in the kitchen (DH is a lost cause)

another advantage to off-centering the range and the sink in each of these counters is that you get one huge area to work on, at each counter. It feels bigger. The other smaller area then becomes a landing pad and can be a minor work area too.

For those of you who are interested here is a picture of almost the same view of the dining area above, taken today, after they sprayed my apartment with mold resistant paint. What a difference a day makes!
