First of all, cabs are beautiful :-) But, you're right, doors/drawer fronts do look different ?color? than frames. I'll bet someone here on GW may be able to suggest why... Offhand, could it be he painted the frames from a can of paint that was mixed separately from the door/drawer batch? Did he spray frames but roll the doors? Did he use different types of wood? Just trying to brainstorm some possibilities.

Get a bright light and shine on the cabinets directly. (Like an auto emergency light.) Then, take some more pics. I think what you're mostly seeing is an artifact of the light/shadows in the space.

They are different. Could be that the poly top coat is yellowing the drawer fronts more. Maybe he just had a heavier hand on the poly on the drawer fronts. Could be not enough paint on the frames and you're seeing primer thru. Could be a lot of things. But to my eye, they look different. So he should make sure they match, however he has to make it right.

They look different to me as well, as if the doors and drawer fronts have a thicker coat of paint on them. It is completely reasonable for you to expect the finish to be uniform on all parts of the cabinets. It is the painters responsibility to make sure that everything matches, regardless of what he has to do to make that happen. I vote for repainting, but you certainly shouldn't be paying EXTRA to have cabinets surfaces that match.

Thanks everyone for verifying what I am seeing. The cabinets do look like the finish is thicker on the drawer fronts and cabinets. My eyes have a bit of a color issue...
Here is a close up of the most obvious thin spray area on the frame.
My daughter said "mom why did you get two tone cabinets"
So now what happens if he only takes back the cab frames to redo and they don't match up to the door fronts?
Cabinet makers how would you solve this?

Can't add anything to what's been said but your cabinets, tile floor & stained glass door are a nice combination. Looks like you're going to have a beautiful kitchen!

Send 'em back! Light will bounce off slightly different angles differently here and there, especially in photos, but not on every single door!

They will sure be nice when they're done though.

once you get it solved you'll have to post the cabinetmaket. Those are some seriously gorgeous beaded insets.

Do you think if he just does the cabinet frames and leaves the doors/drawers alone it will look ok? He said he needs to sand off the poly coats and re-spray.

Over all I am really happy with the quality of the cabinets, the construction is excellent. All 3/4 birch plywood boxes. Poplar frames - except the door insides are mdf for stability.
He's a part timer and doesn't do beaded often or painted and had some reservations about the painted finish. But he's a great guy and will redo. It's just a hassle.

The problem might have been the woods themselves. Birch and Poplar, though sim ilar in many ways, are different in how they absorb paint/stain. It may be that he only has to repaint the frames with another coat. I wish you luck.

The frames of the cabinet boxes, and the drawer fronts and door frames are all poplar. He had the cabinet boxes made and painted then made the doors/drawers which had a problem warping due to humidity in July. So he remade the doors/drawers and then painted them. The cabinet boxes/frames were painted weeks earlier when I saw them and commented on the thin paint coverage. They did not have the clearcoat on at that point. He said oh they aren't finished yet so they will look better. Well they don't and especially next to the doors drawers; it is very noticeable in my kitchens natural light.
I am worried that if he just does the frames over then it will look again different from the doors/drawers.
They should have been painted all at the same time.

I was hoping you'd have gotten resolution by now, ppbenn, but sounds like it hasn't happened yet. Have you spoken w/ him yet about what you want to happen next?

If it really bothers you, then I would have him redo them. Yes, it is a pain but in the end a short period of hassle will be worth the relief of having them done correctly as you will be happy to live with them for years to come vs. always noticing the two varying colors.

He will redo. However I have to know if he can just do the cabs/frames and leave doors/drawers alone.
He really did a great job building them, it's the finish that isn't up to how well built they are.
