Another attempt at a kitchen layout

Hello All!

About 2 months ago I posted regarding a new construction kitchen. The help and suggestions I got were amazing but building has been delayed and the kitchen plan simply will not work. I am disappointed and a bit discouraged after meeting with the KD. Anyway, I am at it again and in need of your expertise to help me design a kitchen that is functional and fun for a family of 4 (2 young ones) with more on the way (hopefully).

Sorry for the bad drawings and lots of attachments but I am looking forward to what you all have to say.

Thanks in advance.

Most refrigerators can't be placed right up against a wall unless the front is close enough to the doorway so that the door can swing out into open space. The door handle will hit the wall and you won't be able to open drawers fully.

You show storage on the ends of your island, the full width, but won't that infringe on the seating overhang? To make sure there is enough room to access the ovens and have walkway, I would consider reducing the island to 4 ft.

Otherwise, it's looking pretty good to me!

What's to the right of the coffee area? Is there a reason why you can't extend the sink wall another 2-3feet, to gain more storage/counterspace?
It seems like you have the room; 13' wall is not that big, is it?
(I've been staring at my designed layout for months, so I can't help to compare. My sink wall is about 23feet long.)

Per rhome's comment about the fridge, perhaps swap the DO w/ the fridge. I like having the fridge closer to the dining area, for quick grabs of ice, ketchup, etc.

Oops- I drew the refrigerator wall wrong on the overall kitchen plan.
The double ovens will be at the dining room side with the fridge near the foyer doorway. I also like the idea of that for easy grabbing and door opening.

Rhome- thanks for the imput. I loved the renderings you did for me in July. I hate how small the drop zone/kid pantry area is but am hoping it will be useful.
My toaster/sandwich making area in our rental is 24" wide and seems ok so I'm hoping I will like it. Your pics and use of different finishes are some of my inspirations. The cook top. coffee area and island will all be different finishes than the cabinets and island top will be wood.

My mistake on the island- I will just do one larger storage cabinet at the cook top end. Do I have to allow for the overhang on the sink side too?

Amanda- 23 feet- lucky you- based on the foyer doorway I thought the cabinet run should end there so the kitchen would be symmetrical. Do you think if I extended it, it would look ok?

Great feedback already- thanks so much.

I wonder if we're not understanding each other...I didn't mean anything about having overhang on the sink side of the island. I was just noticing you had 2 storage cabs on the stove end (which you've said should be 1), and 'display' area across the end facing the table. But you don't show depth for either, since the side facing the sink is fully used, and the back needs the entire length for seating/leg room.

Will you not have any traffic whipping around the corner from the dining room end and running into an open oven door? If it's a rarely used doorway, or has great visibility into the kitchen, I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if people will come sort of blindly into that doorway, it's something to think about.

Actually, it looks very well thought out and I like many of the details you plan. I did notice that you have alot of pullouts. I've read that you do lose space with pullouts as opposed to drawers. Is there some reason you prefer them to more drawers? Either way, I think you're kitchen will turn out fabulous!

Your refrigerator is pretty far from your sink...I would consider putting a prep sink in the island for prepping.

I don't think I would swap refrigerator & DO....the island is approaching "barrier island" status if you do that (from the sink's point of view). Rather, I'd make the Foyer doorway 4'3" and put a 6" broom closet b/w the refrigerator & wall. (See IKEAFans for 4" broom closet...no, you don't need IKEA cabs.)

The island....a couple of things. This is how your island appears based on the labels:

Note the overlap of all the cabinets...not just with the seats, but also with each other.

This is what you could do...

    BUT...this is what I recommend....

Note that I took 3" away from the sink/DW side of the island to give you 3" more for the island overhang. 15" is the recommended overhang (assuming counter height).

I also recommend putting in 30" deep drawers on the one end of the island to take advantage of the "extra" space you have under the island. On the cooktop end, the previously mentioned prep sink.

    [Or, without prep sink...

I would move the ref near the hutch and go ahead with a full baking area and dining room staging counter - even considering with the other placement of the ref. Food from ref often goes to sink before anything else happens and it locates it nearer the breakfast area. Otherwise, you have a nearly barrier island.

I would not place the ovens at the dining room doorway. Too much of a hazard for me. If you keep it in the corner, you have to "filler" it out from the corner a bit so the opening oven door clears the door casing (1 to 3 inches depending on how elaborate your casings are).

What rhome said, too. A cabinet and a chair can't occupy the same place. (OMG, I'm talking physics) The first stool at the cooktop side of the island is also marked as a 30" cabinet.

    I like your plan overall.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Be careful about extending the cabinets further into the eating area....be sure you have plenty of room to move around the table & chairs b/w the cabinet run....especially since those are doors, not windows, in the table area. I think 6' or so would be ideal there....but 5' might work.

If you think you have enough room to add a couple more feet of cabinet space there, then I would consider moving the refrigerator there...

    1. Better work flow...ref --> sink --> cooktop

    2. Better refrigerator access for the table area...which I assume will be used more than the DR

    3. Better refrigerator access to the FR

    4. Refrigerator closer to the MW

    5. Refrigerator & MW both on periphery

I'd move the refrigerator drawers over to the snack area for kids' snacks and replace the ref drawers with dish drawers for dish storage. Ref drawers are great for holding kids' drinks & snacks (maybe some apples, carrots, etc.)

Then, you could put in a 33" utility or pantry cabinet (or tall cabinet w/small MW for popcorn & snack dishes) and expand the snack area to 36" or so. The tall cabinet is only a suggestion so it gives the wall the symmetry you seem to need. You could move the hutch you have on the sink wall now to this location instead of the tall cabinet....

I think I would still put in a prep sink on the island for the kids' snack area. With the ref drawers, sink, & small MW, the kids (or other snackers/grazers) might never have to enter the kitchen proper!

    Just some more ideas!

    Wow!
    Great ideas!
Buehl- your drawing for the island (3rd one) seems perfect. In the original plan, I had a prep sink but when seating moved to the side of the island, I thought it would not fit. The storage for rarely used items is great. I even like the idea of reducing the aisle. I am glad that you and rhome noticed the duplication of use of space. Thank you.

It looks like people think the double ovens should stay where they are for safety reasons. I think I agree but don't know what to do with the fridge. The 4'9 doorway to the foyer is set so options are limited and I am really concerned about extending the sink wall because of the french doors and table.
I agree that fridge is far from the sink so this is why I put the fridge drawers in this area- milk for coffee, drinks, snacks and stuff. If I moved them to the snack area for the kids, would that eliminate the kid pantry? That space is so small already but I think it could work. A small microwave sounds great .
    there.

remodelfla- hadn't thought about the pullouts- I guess I just like the way they looked. I will definitely consider other options to maximize space.

If the fridge stays where it is, do you think I should reduce the island to 4 feet to make it less of a barrier?

Keep the ideas coming and thanks again for the great advice and suggestions.

Hmmmm...something else to mention...your Warming Drawer location. The consensus here (and on Appliances) is that for a Warming Drawer to be useful, it should be as close to your cooktop as possible. When asked whether they like/use their WD and if they'd get them again, the majority of those that say "yes" are those whose WD is near the cooktop. Those who placed their WD in an oven stack farther from the cooktop generally said they didn't use them and that they wouldn't get them again. So...it's the old saying, "location, location, location!"

Right now, you have your WD quite far from the cooktop...I recommend moving it elsewhere. The drawer beneath the double ovens, then, can be used for casserole dishes, cake pans, etc. (Above is an ideal location for trays, roasting rack, cooling racks, etc.)

I'm going to suggest a slight rework of your cooktop wall. Have 18" uppers on either side of the hood. Reduce the 36" drawer base to a 30" and put a WD in that 30" base. That will leave you two drawers in that base.

Next, add those 6" you "lost" to the utility cabinet and have a 21" utility cabinet.

    Something like this...

    last modified: 11 years ago

Didn't notice the warming drawer before...I glossed over the elevations and only paid attn to the floorplan. But I certainly agree that it's not in a convenient location. Too far from the cooktop and worse that it's on the floor.

I love the prep sink, but don't love the fridge on the sink wall. You lose too much of what you had planned there, and with the prep sink where it is, you'll be crossing the cleanup zone to access the fridge...Passing one sink to get stuff to bring back to the 2nd sink. It doesn't make good 'path sense' to me. Could you consider putting the fridge next to the ovens (ctr position) with the kids' counter toward the dining room? That way the fridge isn't in a location that makes a 'barrier island,' either.

    Hi Buehl

Thanks for the picture and ideas. A few questions...

I like the sink wall but do you think there is enough storage space? I had figured the 2 upper 27" for glasses/mugs and dishes and the 30" lower for bowls and other serving pieces. The upper glass cabinet would be for a collection of stone plates/mugs and serving pieces.
Maybe I could use the 36" island cabinet for the dishes?

The cook top wall seems great. I like the symmetry and agree that the warming drawer makes more sense there. If I didn't do a prep sink, I thought it may work at the cook top end of the island but I like your idea.

For the ref wall: does the ref. drawer eliminate the lower pantry? I had envisioned the kids being able to grab snacks/cereal. The tambour on the upper cabinet would house the toaster and bread.
If I moved the tall hutch over here, I guess the lower portion could be a dry pantry with the coffee station on the counter and display in the upper glass cabinets. Hmm.... coffee/kid and breakfast all out of the main work area-that could work.
I did not realize I had to account for door trim and would need a bigger cabinet for the double ovens. thanks.

For the wet bar: The smallest sink base I see from the cabinet company is for 21" and that is for a vanity sink base. Is that what you are suggesting?

Sorry for my newbie questions. i am learning so much and appreciate the help.

One last thing.... with the fridge on the sink wall- would you panel it? I liked the idea of the different finish hutch with glass uppers as much for the look as the function. Will a big hunk of ref look o.k. as you walk into the kitchen from the foyer? I'm worried it is the 1st thing people will see from the front door.

    Rhome-
we were posting at the same time. Hadn't thought about the path issue but am concerned about moving the fridge. I really liked the look (and function) of the sink wall. Maybe the fridge in the middle spot could be the answer? Buehl drawing seems functional for kid/coffee area but I am not sure.

If I did that, ref drawers would move back to the island.

Hmm.... this will be a tough decision.

    last modified: 11 years ago

    Another question:

If I put a prep sink in the island, should I eliminate the sink in the wet bar area?
I liked it because it was close to the eating area for water fill ups and quick spill pick up and also thought it could work as a small entertaining buffet and for making cocktails.

The kitchen I have now and the kinds I grew up with were small and simple. I know we are blessed to be able to build this but is it too much? Is it overkill to have 3 sinks?!

TIA for any and all opinions.

Ok, so the purple-e lines are the paths of duffers and helpers. The blue-green are some doors open and seats occupied. The reds are the paths of the "chef".

This may or may not be very meaningful, but I don't like the mash-up at the ref, and at the dining room door. Also the "doing the dishes" sort of pathway where the trash is beyond the dw and both need to be open and the sink is beyond them both.

I don't know how the op would use the ref drawers v. the ref for veg, butter, milk and eggs. Because I've never had something like that, I don't know that I can understand this. But off hand, it looks like a check twice (in the drawers and then the ref). The rest of the food is a hike!

Some of it has very easy solutions too, like the warming drawer to the island facing the cooktop and/or two trash pullouts - one for everyone and one for prep. Prep sink too.

I'm sorta suggesting the op analyze cooking in this layout - if you're mw people, is it convenient? Where the bowls or cutting boards or knives are located, Which ref contains the dough rising, where the cake mixes are or whatever makes sense for the way you cook. We always answer based on our own experiences and the way we cook . I don't think we know enough about you to take this much further.

I wouldn't consider the wet bar part of the kitchen, and that sink will really have no bearing on kitchen tasks....So you still only have 2 sinks in the kitchen. ;-) Would the wet bar serve you better in the family room, or would you feel OK about the wet bar sink if it were in another room? If you would, because a lot of people have wet bars elsewhere in their houses, I think you should give yourself permission to have what will best suit your purposes, as long as it's within the budget.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Thanks for the responses- lots to think about.

Rhome- good advice- I need to think more about what best suits our purposes and in your words, "give myself permission" to do it. It is something I am struggling with but I really do like the sink there. With a smaller sink base (as suggested by buehl), I think I may even try to put a trash there and really improve the function.

bnorepanic- your drawing gives me lots to think about. For reference, I am not a very fancy cook and hardly bake at all (certainly not from scratch). We are big grill people and I most often use the cook top for steaming vegs, boiling pasta, and making eggs/pancakes. The microwave is used mostly for heating/reheating and popcorn. I visualize using the cabinets on the cook top wall for storing pots/pans, bowls for cooking and food prep storage (spices, sauces, oils, etc.) and small appliances (mixer/chopper etc.). This area has 3 feet of counter space leading to the corner and another 3 on the wall leading to the sink so I am visualizing it as the primary prepping station. Easy access to the range at one end and to the sink at the other. For a second cook/kid helper), I thought the island and prep sink could work and that person would not be in my way. This also leaves room for a visitor (non-helping) to sit at the far end of the island and converse without interfering. Does this make sense?

For my clean up area- I was visualizing the counter space above and to the right of the sink/dishwasher. Seems that dishes from the table could be dropped off easily at this end while someone else was at the sink starting to rinse. Does that seem logical?

I have decided to keep the refridgerator on the short wall and will most likely move it to the center position. We are not willing to give up the function/look of sink wall and hutch. With the prep sink in the island and kid/breakfast area to the side, I am thinking traffic should not be a problem because the dining room will be used much less frequently. I'm thinking the kids can grab a snack & make a sandwich and get a drink without really interfering with me cooking/washing dishes.

Putting the warming drawer on the cook top wall (as suggested by buehl) will make it much more functional and I think that we will move the microwave to the cook top end of the island. Doing this, will give me more options for the sink side of the island. Do you think I should move the trash down? I was worried about it interfering with opening the dishwasher. I could use some help with this space.

Regarding the ref drawers, I need to think about that. My husband is really keen on them and I basically think they would be used for storing drinks (soda/juice boxes) and for milk for the coffee station that is directly behind it.
I definitely don't want to duplicate supplies and be running back and forth to look for ketchup and mustard!
Maybe the ref. drawers should be moved to the end of the island?.

Sorry to be so long winded- I really appreciate the thought provoking questions. It forces me to really focus on function so I guess I'm just thinking (and writing) out loud.

Thanks again for any help or thoughts.

One last thing, if I added a second trash- where should it go? I mentioned the wet bar area but this really doesn't solve the problem of people having to enter the prep/cleanup area to throw things out.

    Thanks again.

    last modified: 11 years ago

oops... just realized that the prep sink and microwave can not take up the same space:( and certainly not if the trash is at the far end of the island.
Gosh- I am bad at this!

    last modified: 11 years ago

If you do Buehl's prep sink island, it keeps the trash where you had it, which is right across from the sink and not in interference with the dishwasher. Additionally, it's fairly handy to the stove and the prep area...Actually, it's exactly like mine is positioned and it works really well for us. It's our only trash and we do fine with it. I plan to put a compost bucket and maybe a small trash can underneath the prep sink...Just the kind that sits inside the cabinet.

Can you fit the microwave on the short wall? I think it would be best suited to being near the kids' station and the fridge. You can use it in meal making without too much trouble and others can use it for snacks or leftovers without getting in your way. OR...Do you need the tall cabinet by the stove? It'd be a good place to put a microwave in the bottom shelf of an upper cabinet.

I like your plan and the reasons you have for the arrangement. I think having the fridge in the center solves some of the problems in Bmore's traffic pattern study.

    last modified: 11 years ago

rhome, It's that threading the needle dishes thing because the walkway bounces back and forth from the island side to the sink side. I'd like to see the trash exchange places with the 18" unit beside the sink and perhaps add a trash near the wet bar.

A bev ref, ref drawers(6.7 cubic feet in 36" drawers) and a 42" sxs? As far as I know, there isn't a 27" dw. You could have a 24" and a 9" pullout or cabinet for step stool. Or a 30" dw and a 3" filler.

There's some pretty good agreement that cabinets with pullouts are inefficent drawers. To get something out of a pullout cabinet, you have to open both doors and pull the tray forward, get your item, close the tray, and close both doors. If you had a cabinet with "pot drawers" or deep drawers, you open the drawer, get your item and close the drawer.

    last modified: 11 years ago

I was only talking about solving the crowding problem at the fridge.

I'm not sure I'm completely understanding the threading the needle reference...You mean that when things are open, the walkway is a zigzag? Is there a time when that would be an issue?...Because I think ours must be like that and I never notice a problem. But I can agree that your trash plan, Bmore, is a workable one...and has merits over what I said. I was OK with where it was, so didn't look for other/better options.

BTW, I have to retract my total support of Buehl's 3rd island, because I don't like the microwave placement (which is your original location). Doesn't seem handy to fridge for warming leftovers or steaming veggies, popcorn (in kids' area?), or freezer for thawing.

I agree about pullouts (hate 'em)...Drawers are WAY better. Love 'em, love 'em, love 'em.

    last modified: 11 years ago

Rhome- thanks for the good idea about moving the microwave. I will replace the tall utility cabinet on the cook top wall with upper and lower storage and put the microwave in the top part of the cabinet.
This also solves the problem of the microwave in the island- freeing up that space for storage. Also, it gives me a 51" counter to the left of the cook top. I'm not much of a baker but seems like this would be a good spot for that and if not, certainly a good place for a mixer and additional prep for a 2nd/3rd cook.

Based on suggestions for changing the cook top wall, I also eliminated the 36" lower cabinet with pull outs and replaced it with a 30" drawer stack. The top drawer will house the warming drawer.
I appreciate the opinions on the pull-outs and will also consider changing the pull out at the bottom of the hutch (by the coffee area). It seems as though deep drawers may be more useful for storing.

Regarding the refrigeration- believe me bmorepanic- I agree that it is major overkill. I'm working on talking my husband out of it as we speak especially since we will have a refrigerator in the basement for surplus.
With that gone and the microwave moved, I have lots of space in the island for storage and can even go back to the idea of display and/or baskets at the eating end.

I will need to think about the trash placement. I already added 1 to the wet bar area and need to decide on whether the sink side or island side is better. The 18" drawers will hold wraps, ziplocks and other supplies so to me it seems like 6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of another. Both are needed in the clean up area.

Finally, regarding the dishwasher- I plan on a 24" one but read that a 27" cabinet was needed. If that is not the case, I will be happy to increase the size of the storage cabinet to its' right.

    OK.....so what do you think?

    last modified: 11 years ago

Unless you're getting a special DW I don't know about, you don't need a cabinet for a DW. It fits between 2 cabinets.

The empty space you see here is where our DW now is.

If you eliminate the utility cabinet on the cooktop wall, have you put it elsewhere? Or, do you have another place close by for your broom, cleaning supplies, etc.? The pantry on the opposite end of the dining area?

Where are the ovens going? Next to the Foyer doorway?

Two trash pullouts....I'd put one near the sink and one near the cooktop & prep area. I wish I had had room for 2 trash pullouts. I'm finding it rather inconvenient to cross back & forth from my prep & cook area to the sink w/trash.

I'm almost of the opinion that if you only have room for one trash pullout, it should be in the prep area. When prepping & cooking, I use it many times throughout and have to cross back & forth. But when cleaning up, it would have been easy enough to bring the plates from the table, scrape, and continue on to sink.

I'm struggling with this issue in my kitchen right now as all the pullouts & pivot outs are too deep or too wide for under my prep sink! I have a small wastebasket sitting in there now, but it's been knocked over a couple of times and pushed back into the corner other times making it a pain! (It's a corner sink base w/13-3/4" clear opening & only abut 10" of depth!)

Pullout/roll out trays vs drawers: unless you have an overriding need for pullout shelves, go with drawers. I do have one cab w/2 rollout trays and it's such a pain! It has two doors that I have to open & then pullout the shelf. It's the Pet Center & the dog food can is on the bottom shelf...so it's used at least twice a day! If I had thought about it, I would have made it another trash pullout-type cabinet. If I had just one door, I could still do it, but since I have two...nope!

I mention these things to help you get a real-life perspective on them!

Thank buehl. I will happily add the 3" to the base cabinet next to the dishwasher.
BTW, Your cabinets are gorgeous- what is the finish? Have any more pictures to share?

By moving the tall utility cabinet, I do lose the broom closet but figure that it can work on the wall (or maybe the back of the door)in the pantry. Even though it is on the other side of the room, I think it will work and the trade off with the microwave seems worth it.

Double ovens are going next to the foyer doorway. As I'm sure you got from my previous post, I am not a baker and prefer grilling outdoors to roasting indoors. In some ways, the double ovens seem like a waste to me but I figure maybe this new kitchen will inspire me to experiment some more. Also, I come from a very big family and am guessing that now that I will have the "big new house", lots of holidays will be had so they will get put to use.
I told my husband that he should buy me cooking lessons for Christmas.
Seriously though, my girlfriend and I decided that cooking will be our "now that I'm 40 (next year), we should learn something new" hobby.

After reading these posts last night I goggled pull outs and it really seems like drawers are the better option- one less step sounds good to me.

I'm still working through the trash thing. Thanks for the real life perspective- it really helps.

Speaking of real life perspective- the message center.
We met with the builder last night and he said we could borrow a little more space from the bathroom and/or pantry to make the nook bigger.
Do the think the 42" I allowed is enough? Would you make it bigger or change the design?
I basically want a space for a lap top, drop spot for mail/school papers and a place for the chargers.

When doing the dishes, the trash and the dw are open at the same time? I'm sorry if the previous post sounded too wacked. Rhome, you know I think you're wonderful.

The op intends on prepping between the sink and range on the perimeter. The new home for the trash can would be in the prep area.

I like that location for the mw!

Another thought for the message area is a "standing" desk. I can't remember who, but someone did a slightly canted top - so it would hold a laptop or book open, but couldn't collect junque. They were very happy with it.

I think 42" is huge for a message area but really tiny for a full-fledged desk area. You could have two stacks of 21" wide drawers underneath and assign a drawer to each person as well as a pidgeon hole above.

Is it possible to move the ovs to the area where you were going to have coffee area and then "coffee bar" next to ref? Do a coffee pot filler tap off the ice line? You could also put a second small trash in this area so that microwave and coffee trash could be disposed of without crossing the rest of the kitchen

"maybe this new kitchen will inspire me to experiment some more"

I did cook and bake before I got my new kitchen, but not like I do now! Somehow having a great work space has motivated me to try things I've never done before. Today I am dunking and peeling tomatoes to make salsa and enchilada sauce (already did spaghetti sauce), and am mixing up pie fillings to freeze, using my way-too-many-still-green tomatoes from the garden. I've been trying my hand at crusty artisan breads (I recommend Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day...Easy and fast...and fun when it comes out so great!) My kids bake cakes and cookies and brownies and pies and... Give yourself the possibilities to do whatever might interest you later.

I like the trash where Bmore suggested (to the left of the sink) for reaching it more directly from the stove/prep/micro area.

My still-developing desk area is about 42" wide. I tried to set up our main computer there, but there was no room for the printer and the large monitor took up so much of the desk. We moved that to another location, and I'll just have a laptop at the 42" space. It was planned at regular desk height, but I'm going to make it stool or standing height instead. I couldn't do the slanted top because I didn't see that great message/desk area Bmore mentioned before our house was finished and the electrical outlet and internet connection outlet would have to move, and we're not up for that.

Bmore, we have a mutual admiration society, and should just agree to go ahead and challenge each other or disagree occasionally without having to apologize, because I promise to not be offended if you won't! So if I say, "What the heck are you talking about," or if you say, "Are you crazy?" we'll know it was said in complete respect and probably a grin. :-D

Even though I like the function of the coffee bar next to the refrigerator, I am not so sure about the ovens on the sink wall. You will be able to see this area from the front door/foyer and I was looking forward to finishing the coffee/display hutch in a different color and showing off some pretty pottery we got while in Italy a few years ago. The warm tuscan colors are actually one of the inspirations for the "old world" feel I want in the kitchen.

Regarding the message center- any additional info on who may have done the standing desk would be great. I had envisioned a place for a seat which is why I only have one bank of drawers but maybe that could work.

What do you think about putting the 2nd trash in the lower cabinet at the end of the cook top wall? It would be below the microwave and accessible from the kid area/island and secondary prep area without coming into the cooking/prep and clean up zone that covers the area between the cook top and the sink (including the corner). I really see this 6 foot of counter space as the most important for me to complete tasks.

As always, thanks for any imput.

It being the most important task area, also means it's an important storage location, too. Have you mapped out where everything you have (or will have) will fit in the new kitchen? I do like the idea of the kids being able to throw things away without walking through the cook zone.

Hi Rhome... all that food sounds yummy- it's people like you that inspire me to want to try to cook and more importantly, to teach our children to want to learn too. My mom always let us help when we were kids. Unfortunately, she passed away when I was way too young (13 years ago). I sure wish I would have paid more attention. No recipes- just a little of this and some of that and lots of great memories too! I really am going to enjoy experimenting in my new kitchen.

I have been putting lots of thought into storage for the new kitchen. I'm thinking that the shelves above the microwave can be used for storing bowls and I will also have 1 drawer below the warming drawer. Pots and pans will go under the range and spices in the pull outs on either side of the cooktop. That leaves me with 2 additional upper cabinets for food prep supplies (oils/sauces) and additional bowls/small appliances (hand mixer, chopper) and measuring devices. Even if I lose the base cabinet space below the microwave for a 2nd trash, I think this should be enough storage.
Also, with the microwave out of the island, I think that space at the cook top end will be perfect for additional items (large mixer, baking stuff).
    What do you think?

I really need to try to find pictures or more info on the standing desk. It sounds like it would be great.

If I move the 1st trash to the sink side (in place of stack of drawers) would you recommend putting that stack where the trash was originally at the end of the island? I had planned that for dish towels, wraps, ziplocks, etc.

One other thing- a few months back you helped me with some elevations and sent me some photos from your kitchen. I liked the way you used different finishes in your space. I want to do something similar and plan for the island, the area above the cook top and the hutch to be different than the perimeter cabinets. I am looking at distressed creams, blacks and sage green or distressed red.
Would you mind sending them again?

    Thanks so much.

I think that's a good place for the kitchen towels. You might want the plastic wrap and stuff closer to the fridge? Ours is in the island facing the sink, but only because I couldn't find room by the fridge, and figured that'd be close to where things were coming from the table. I might move it to the other side of the island if I can move a few things around.

Below is a link to the post I put on the Gallery of my kitchen awhile back. Since then the dw door panels are on, the island is painted, and some other things are done, but this should give you the idea of the colors and finishes. If you want something more, let me know. If needed, I'll take more photos... as soon as my mess is cleaned up from dealing with tomatoes!

    Crescent
    Congrats on your new construction
? Is the whole house new construction?

Reason I asked - I've looked through pics & a couple of things keep glaring - 1st location of 1st floor bathroom w/o elevations, and seeing better plans it gives the appearance that you walk in foyer & bathroom is right there?

    - what are the plans for ventilation over cooktop? You are limited due to the fact the cooktop is located on interior wall. IF it was located on Ext wall you could have highly efficient ventilation straight out - just a thought....

    - Also, again not seeing good pics/plans using buehl's renderings as best guess of overall layout/look - You have this expansive kitchen space but everything is located in one end - making it look "top heavy" - It made me think of a friends home, lovely older home - they did addition a few yrs ago family room open to kitchen - all high end - you walk into this new space & kitchen is all pushed up against 1/4 of the new space facing away from windows/family room -

I realize this is a tedious task - and that your 1st plans failed for whatever reasons. Sometimes in the process you really cant see "the forest for the trees" - I know, I have been through the process which does feel uncomfortable and down right frustrating at times.

Do you have any real life pics of space ?

Have you considered posting blank canvas giving dimensions of space & then list of what you know you want ?
Cooktop, 48" dbl door refrig, island, etc>....

    Just some thoughts
    good luck

Been away from the computer all weekend and missing GW.
Rhome- just saw pics of your puppy and one of your little ones- very cute. The kitchen looks great too- thanks for the link. I especially love the burgandy color you used.
I'm thinking the wraps and stuff may work in the top drawer of the microwave cabinet- above the trash and near to the fridge.

Jetvtr- hi and thanks. House is new construction and they are just clearing the lot now. Unfortunately, I do not have real life pictures but the house will be a traditional center hall colonial with a full porch across the front. The foyer will be single story but large. A 5 foot opening on open side opens to the living room and dining room with built ins between and french doors at both ends for access to the porch (from LR) and deck (from DR).
5 foot opening at the other side of the foyer will have french door leading into the office/5th bedroom. This room will have an entrance to the hall bath.
From the foyer, you will walk back into the kitchen and family room area. The foyer hallway will have stairs to the basement on the left side and a doorway to the bathroom on the right.
From the foyer, you will be able to look back to the kitchen and this is why I want to be sure that the sink wall looks as appealing as possible ( the coffee bar/display cabinet).
I get what you are saying about the "top heavy" kitchen since most of it will be located to the left side but the french doors to the deck make it impossible to extend the cabinets much further on that wall.
To counter this effect, on the eating side, we are planning a 51/2 foot wet bar and a 42" message area. With a large table and some pretty lighting, I am hoping it will balance out. I know the drawing is bad but if you look at the very top of this post, there is a drawing that shows the overall kitchen plan.

Any thoughts or ideas that you (or anyone else has) on this plan and how to improve it would be appreciated.

    Thanks again.

There have been changes to the plans since this drawing but maybe this will help put the kitchen space in perspective to the overall house.
I'll look forward to hearing any comments.
    Thanks.

I think it's tonda1 who has the standing desk. She doesn't seem to have her pictures posted wherever they were but she might respond to an email.
