installing a cooktop over an oven

1. What are the installation considerations when installing a cooktop over an oven?

2. I want the cooktop to be gas and haven't decided if I want the oven to also be gas or electric. Which combination would offer me the most appliance choices--gas over gas or gas over electric? Which combination eats up more space?

3. I've noticed that a cooktop over an oven causes the cook to almost be on bended knees to remove something from the oven. Has anyone found a way to help alleviate this?

Gas ovens are few and far between so you'd most likely end up with gas over electric. If you want gas over gas you might as well get a range.

If you go with a cooktop over an oven you'll need to make sure of the clearances and if they're not the same brand and an "approved" configuration, you might run into finger pointing if something goes wrong - although many people do it.

1. That is what I have. Mine is an electric cooktop. I don't know what the installation considerations are but there was enough clearance.

3. Not any more than a freestanding range. I like it because I can prepare things on the stovetop and take them straight down to the oven. The only thing I don't like is that things drip on the oven door more than the wall oven I have next to it.

Ovens mounted under counter, especially under a cooktop are closer to the floor than in a free standing range. We considered putting a 2nd oven undercounter, but only the one we'd use the least. In the end we decided against it for a variety or reasons...the lower height was one of them.

We visited a showroom that had one mounted undercounter--with no cooktop over it--and we realized that it was just too low. The oven was at approx the level of the bottom drawer of an electric range or the separate broiler of a gas range....when the door was opened, the handle was just a couple of inches off the floor. If you're short, it may not be a problem, but our family is tall so it would definitely be a problem. We decided to go w/a double oven and put a MW drawer where the undercounter oven was going to go.

As Weissman mentioned, be sure of your clearances for both the cooktop and the oven.

We have done it in our last three kitchens, gas cooktop, electric oven.

Currently we have a Viking cooktop, over a Dacor oven.

You will find that some cooktops are just too thick to reasonably put an oven under. In each of our cases, I was able to get the top of the oven within half an inch of the bottom of the counter.

This is what I had wanted to do but found it impossible. If you have a pro-style gas cooktop, with the knobs in front rather than on top where the grates are, it is nearly impossible, if not proscribed by cooktop manufacturer as in my case, to put oven beneath. There just isn't enough room for all the gas fittings and the oven. Check manufacturers specs before doing such a combo.

I have a gas cooktop installed over an electric oven, and I'm very satisfied with the arrangement. Since I don't bake all day, every day, the slightly lower height of the oven is a non-issue.
