What's behind your range?

Hello all-

We just got a new slide in range and I am trying to decide on what to do for a backsplash. THere are no upper cabinets on the range wall, just the vent hood.

Currently we have a 4" backsplash of small tumbled marble tiles, which stops where our old range used to sit. Now that we don't have the control panel at the back of the range, there is a big blank space.

Do I put in a backsplash that reaches to the bottom of the vent hood? Would it look weird if the entire range wall is not tiled? Another 4" BS? Does anyone have pictures?

Here is a picture of the range wall with our old range. You can just see the 4" BS. I've also included a pic of the new hood which is yet to be installed.

Thanks for the advice.

I am not sure how tile in just that area would look. What about getting a clear piece of lexan or plexiglass and putting it up there? It would be nearly invisible but still be very cleanable.

If the range and hood are stainless, a sheet of stainless just the width of the hood would look good. If the range and hood are not stainless, a tile backsplash just the width of the hood would probably be the best solution, short of tiling the entire wall.

Will the new hood be stainless? I too would opt for a stainless backsplash as well and put it down to the end of the stove, if those tiles wouldn't be too hard to remove without ruining the wall.

You could also do a beautiful tile backsplash as well that would go up to the hood. Something in a mosaic would be very pretty to go with your pretty kitchen!

Is your drainboard stainless? The stainless backsplash would match and draw those elements together.

If the hood and range are stainless, I agree that a stainless backsplash would be great. the hood looks white in the little picture though.

The hood and new range are both white (as are all the appliances and cabinets) It is sort of a white and cream kitchen.
My initial thought was to put some sort of mosaic from the range top to the bottom of the hood and make it 30" wide, but then I started to wonder if that would look funny to have the tiles just end into the wall on each side of the mosaic. I have also considered wallpapering the entire wall and using a plexiglass behind the range. Or maybe a cool wall sicker covered with plexiglass?

Thanks for all of your tips!

If you do decide to tile it, be sure to select a tile that has nice bull-nose pieces available so you could finish off the edges.

I am in the middle of the same decision. My range is 30" stainless duel fuel Kitchenaid. I have bought a Best hood (this is another line that Broan carries) hood and blower and would like to get the same feel as my my daughter's treatment .(see pics).
She has a Wolf stove with a Wolf backsplash, but her hood is a Best ( same as I ordered). I can't use that backsplash as it is custom to Wolf. I'm thinking of having a metalwork shop make me a perforated shelf and many places can supply the stainless backsplash.

If anyone has had a shelf made like this one, could you let me know. Best has a backsplash with a shelf, but it has wire shelves.

We ordered just enough tile to reach the hood. After tile was installed, it looked unfinished so we tried to get more tile. Unfortunately it was discontinued, although the helpful folks at modwalls.com were willing to help us find something that would work.

We lived with it for a while, and eventually changed the wall color (big improvement). Then, I stumbled across a photo on Ikea Hackers showing slim metal shelves (from Pottery Barn) mixed with Ikea goodies on a wall display. We ordered some shelves and, voila!

We still have a 24" shelf that DH is determined to get cut down for the short side of the fan. I'm not sure we need anything on that side.

Anyway, shelves and other wall accessories on tile are a great way to finish a space in a unique way.
