well, crap!

In the light of day, problems emerge with my soapstone:

{{!gwi}}

See the funny machine looking lines? This goes long ways all the way across my island. The lines are about 2" wide. What the heck is this? One of the managers at the fabrication shop (who appears to be rather uninformed about soapstone) is one his way over to look at them.

I know they'll help me out if I want them to, but I'm a little pissed because he was upset at the installer for not oiling. (I asked him not to oil because I wanted to see the stone natural in light of day, because I want to do it myself, and because I want to first make sure i want to oil instead of leaving it natural). Anyway, the fabrication manager guy was upset at the installer because if he'd oiled, I wouldn't have noticed this. Am I right here, that isn't the best attitude? Oh, and worse, apparently the installer SAW this and didn't mention it to me! That really pisses me off a bit.

What do you all think?

Anita

    Aw, that's just patina.

    (Just kidding!!!!)

Sorry for you ... how disappointing. Hopefully everything clears up, literally.

I think they need to make it right, pronto. Cover and tape off anything that will be hurt by dust, NOW! (Like: drawer glides, cabinet faces, etc.) Good luck!

I would be very upset w/ your fabricator because he's right, if it had been oiled you probably wouldn't have noticed, as well as the installer who noticed but didn't point out to you. What's the chance you can get on the phone down to Florida Joshua and get him to weigh in on this for you so you are armed with some information prior to fabricator showing up? I think someone on here has listed his website in the past so you should be able to google and find?

segbrown, loved your patina joke :)

Farmhousebound, thanks for the advice and link to Joshua. After I read that I quickly got on the phone to my soapstone supplier (Jim Avery at Dorado) and had him look at a photo I'd emailed. He was able to give me his thoughts and suggestions just before the fabricator showed up.

Luckily the fabricator readily agreed that it was some mechanical issue (strap friction, wheel chattering; something like that) and will be back tomorrow to polish it out. He says it will be a wet process so it won't generate any dust.

I'm very pleased at how he handled it and it will all be taken care of soon. I'm sorry if I jumped the gun and judged him because he didn't know much about soapstone. (karma, be gentle on me -- I'm stressed!)

    Thanks for weighing in.

Glad things look like they're going to work out.

The sign of a good dealer is how they handle it when things happen. I think it's impossible to not have problems initially, but the response in addressing them is what is key.

The soapstone itself is very pretty!

Problems happen, they always do. Glad to hear it's going to be resolved.

    Things ar elooking great, though.

When my SS was first installed it had some marks that looked like they were left by an orbital sander. The fabricators sent someone out who worked on them and the marks all disappeared. There was no mess then, either. A wet process just as your guy said.

BTW, The first several oilings really won't cover up any imperfections. Once the oil evaporates (or however it disappears), your stone won't even look like it was ever oiled. It's not until you've applied oil numerous times, over several months, that it makes any noticeable and lasting difference.

your stone is so gorgeous - are you sure you want to oil it?
Looks like Green Mountain Original. I never oiled mine and am very happy I didn't. Glad your marks will be gone!

So glad it is working out with your stone and they are going to take care of it. Whew! Breathing a sigh of relief!

Anita...just learn to love the fact that your soapstone obvously came out of a bread factory...most likely the section of the factory where they slice the bread...and all will be well :oP

(And I'm glad you did arrive at a resolution)!

Just to remind everyone. It's Soapstone. Sandpaper will fix it!

Oh, I bet you are stressed out....but I'm so glad they are taking care of it for you. Please let us see pictures when they 'do whatever they do to it'...

    Well? How'd it go?

Looks like someone was using garden tools to create runnels.
