snow!

Anyone else wake up to this view out of their KITCHEN windows this morning? Nothing like 8" of wet cement, I mean snow, on trees that haven't shed their leaves yet...

I'm sorry flwrs!!! I am crossing my fingers about two VERY overgrown apple trees, and not just because my car is under one! Hahaha trailrunner, I just called my MIL in Texas to allow her some gloating time with her 84 degrees :-). I figure after the summer they just survived they should be allowed some satisfaction. Can't bring myself to call DH who is "working" in Florida right now... Last flowers of the year picked yesterday!

It's sunny and 70's in Georgia! I do hope we atleast get an inch or two this winter, though!

Beautiful pic! We live in a wooded subdivision here in Valdez, Alaska. The snow is about halfway down the mountains, now. Can't believe your trees got snow before we did! Maybe it's your elevation? We are sea level.

No snow, but it got down to 14 degrees, last night. I'm so glad I picked the apples, yesterday.

Flwrs- Sorry to see your pear tree took some damage. I hope your lilac will be okay.

Clueless- I'm not wanting any snow this early, but your dog looks like she's having a great time! :)

OT, can someone please explain how my photos somehow expanded without my help? Sorry for the supersized images! They WERE small a couple hours ago.

Love your flowers! I wish I had thought to pick a few yesterday. I don't think your images came out too big--in fact, I had to enlarge slightly to see your golden under the fallen tree limb!

DH is champing at the bit to go skiing. There are a few ski areas already open with more opening every week. Unfortunately, he's so busy at work right now that he's working 7 days and that will continue for about the next month. He's got his skiis tuned and waxed and his ski pass ready to go--all he needs is some time away from work!

Enjoying the slush storm in NE Denver. Unfortunately, I noticed a lot of tree damage, throughout the neighborhood, earlier when I was out. Tree damage is a PITA! The September 21, 1995 snowstorm claimed my silver leaf maple. It was the biggest tree on the block, until I had to have it cut down.

Clueless and Flowers I hope your damage is minimal!

Hmmm, photos are small again, must be something on my end. DD is finally open to ski lessons and I'm going to start again after 11 years. It'll be like starting over for me with all the new equipment - yee haw!

sitting outside in my shorts and a tank top. Our "fall" is 80 degrees or so during the day.

    Shoot me, now.

What marcolo, surely you didn't get enough of the white stuff last winter did you?

I think mr m had difficulty with ice dams ( damns) ...and something about having to pay folks...who were only going to be available come June to clear the ice and repair the damages. Snow build up on the roof...something like that. Several others posted in the worst of the Boston snows and throughout the NE last winter. Roof collapse...

I may fuss and fume about the heat but at least there is no damage to structures...only plants.

You have to be brave and handy or have a pot of money to live through the past few winters. Even here in AL we had 2 snows last winter and we are in Zone 8a !! One was on Christmas Day. Our latest snow ever was March 1. Our heating bills are through the roof and we have storms and extra insulation...I admire ALL of you...don't know how you do it. c

I think I might remember some choice words about finding contractors... Last winter in Vermont was so long and so white my mother finally gave in and put away the snowblower and allowed that maybe it was time to hire someone. At 78 I think she's due. Snow out here is usually light enough to clear with a push broom, so we all get a little cranky when we have to work :-).

Last winter changed my perspective somewhat.

My entire life long, I have always enjoyed greeting Fall. This year I want to push it head first down my front steps.

Well, I want to be shot for not living through that beauty. I'm sitting here with a nearly-done kitchen, green with envy for others. Geesh. The Jones' I want to keep up with are ones with snow in their front yard. They even have snow in Texas.

After 17 years in LA (aka Armpit of the Universe), you'd think I'dve gotten used to it.

Clueless, thank you so so so so much for posting that wonderful photo. May your trees be ever sinuous.

A few weeks ago a local meteorologist was saying the weather patterns this winter are expected to be similar to last winter's across the nation. For those of you who were pounded by non-stop snowstorms or were impacted by the floods and tornadoes of last winter and spring I can only say I hope that meteorologist is wrong (and they frequently are out here). :)

As for damage from this early snowstorm, my pear tree is not recovering well. Main branch snapped and other branches aren't recovering well. We'll see in the next few days. Willow tree has numerous branches snapped, forsythia broken but will trim back. Oh well, I'll clean things up and plant some tulip bulbs this weekend (and hope that a late spring snow doesn't hit, lol).

Sorry about the pear :( !

Thanks for the positive wishes everyone! The trees and shrubs will be trimmed up and almost as good as before. And yesterday I got some great news! I've been unemployed for 1 1/2 years (that's what put our kitchen reno on hold) and yesterday I found out that a company wants me to do some work for them as a proposal contractor for 4 months full time!!! It was my birthday yesterday and I couldn't have asked for a better gift! It's not a full time permanent job, but it's a start and I'm ecstatic!!! Doin' my happy dance all around the house and even down the aisles of the grocery store, lol!!

They are predicting snow in NJ on Sunday -- freaky!

Congrats flwrs, that is amazing news!

Thanks, Clueless! I can't believe I may be starting this job as soon as Monday!

Congratulations !! In this economic market I would say you are lucky and should for sure do the happy dance...and Happy Birthday too ! c

    Congrats indeed!

    Thank you, Trailrunner and Aliris!

Flwrs_n_co, I am so happy for you to have found some work in the long-time assignment that may get you more jobs. Happy Birthday! Please keep us update.

At 11 PM DS1 said it was changing from rain to snow in Lexington VA. Now that is just crazy for sure.

Supposed to be snow in the NE this weekend...not just a dusting in some places either. Let us all know if you are OK...power outages with all the trees falling...crazy for sure in Oct.

I live in the furthest northwestern limits of the DC metroplex, (the eastern panhandle of WV) and we are having heavy snow right now, started at about dawn. The trees still have full leaves, so power outage is a very real threat. The roads are no more than wet.
Interesting that the trees have stayed in leaf much later than usual; we did not have a frost in my town until Friday morning, 10/28, which is also more than a week beyond average.

    Casey

    Thanks Lynn! Will do.

For those of you in the winter storm warning areas, good luck! Stay safe, and I hope you don't have any power outages or damage from the storm!

I have pics of my bike ride in Westchester NY the first week of November. It was the year Obama was elected. The leaves were just perfect that day as the pics reflect. So this is not unexpected for them to be on the trees in NY.

Westchester 1st week of Nov 2008

view from GWB same day ..leaves have just barely started !!

    just for fun..moi !

We're sitting here waiting for the snow and they say because it is heavy and will fall on trees with leaves, as the OP mentioned, we are likely to have power outages. Just in time for Halloween!

After Irene it took 4 days to get internet and phones back so you can imagine my excitement. Yesterday was spent in emergency weather mode pasting hideous reflectors onto my mailbox so the now plow drivers don't kneecap it in the dark.

Right now, it's about 40 so hopeful we get more rain (not that we need that either) than white stuff.

To my own boys and GW friends in the NE... stay safe from this ridiculously early snow. It's still hot here and I'm looking forward to some cooler weather but know well enough not to complain. And flwrs... AWESOME news. It's heartwarming to see someone excited about opportunity and willing to make the most of it.

Trailrunner... you are so cute. All that AMAZING food and healthy exercise obviously keeps you in tiptop shape.

Well, thank goodness I was able to bring in the last batch of tender plants from the garden this morning because, as I write, the snow is now falling here in NYC! Wow, talk about crazy weather. . . snow before Halloween!

It started less than an hour ago and already looks like Christmas. I'll post a photo later. This is craz-ee.

Waving ~~~ to marthavila. My geraniums and petunia came in last week and are still blooming. You stay snug there!

    snowing like crazy in CT!

remodel...thank you ...if you squint and the light is juuuust right :) Hard to beat that view though no matter how many times I see it.

DB just sent a video from his cell of mid town....coming down pretty hard but not sticking...always warmer in the city .

I hope every one will post pics for sure....sunny and 65 here in AL. c

Caroline, I have to agree with Remodelfla -- you look as stunning in that photo as the gorgeous NY vistas you have posted. You go!

As for you, Roc, I'm furiously waving back atcha from Brooklyn. I, too, brought in my flowering geraniums earlier this week and they are still blooming! (However, my petunias were way too plentiful to rescue and they are still outside. . . getting hammered). Earlier today, I brought in my brugmansia for overwintering. But because she was just getting ready to bloom again, I did not have the heart to simply discard her severely pruned limbs. So, I stuck them in a big bucket of water and stationed it at the windows of my breakfast nook, along with the flowering geraniums. Definitely helps to "warm" the snowy view out my window, I think. .:-)

Meanwhile, as of midday on October 29, here's the scene from one of my front windows, facing the park!:

We are so going to lose power so I'm racing to cook stew before that happens.

Here's why. I just now took this photo of my front yard after 2+ hours of snow. They say it will snow all night so I can't even imagine what will happen to our trees. Our plum 9farthest right) was heavily damaged last Spring by similar snow. Hopefully the driveway will stay clear and nothing will fall on the house.

I was in total denial but here it is, a full on snowstorm. They now say 10-14 inches of snow here in CT.

Picked today, in the snow. The last of my lettuce I fear! This is my first year as a gardener and I can't complain, lettuce from late May to today. Haricots verts, round two, just ended last week.

Hi Rococo, Hi Martha! Stay warm.

I can't help it i love snow. It's the vestiges of years of Pavlovian responses. Snow = no school = fun.

    PS a brugs what?

hi mtn -- was thinking of you. glad you're still on the grid. Just came in from outside tree-freeing mission. Must say a rake gets snow off branches easily but there's 4 inches down already and it's too late to go out again.

    Hope marcolo's roof holds out.

Off to use my kitchen. Stay safe all.

Brugmansia, Mtn! AKA Angel's trumpet. A tropical plant from South America. Here's what she looks like in full (and spent) bloom . . . in my Brooklyn backyard:

But, hey, I'm loving your lettuce! Must have some when I come to visit. . . next year. lol And your . . rose! How pretty. How sad! (I commiserate as my Over The Moons and Don Juans are singing sorry tunes right now).

Roc: Your front yard is a winter wonderland in October. Simply beautiful!

We're in Boulder and l-o-v-e-d the early snow! I was out at 5:45am to whack the trees to help them not get hurt, and then a few more times throughout the day I gave them a good jiggle. Nothing lost! Our neighbors, both sides, not so lucky ....

Monday I'd gone up to Lyons (remember it was near 80 that day?) and was marveling at how insanely gorgeous it is here: we had the most amazing fall color this year! I have lived just about everywhere 'round this globe (clearly I'm exaggerating, but not by much!) and I still cannot believe how beautiful it is, year-round, here at the base of our Rocky Mountains .... We are so lucky, so lucky.

We hate when school is canceled: school is where friends are, where fun stimulation is.

I am so so so so so so jealous. Envious even. Green and red too. I hope you all have a really nice time playing in that stuff. And be grateful you can tell what season it is. I am confused 365 days per year. Be careful for what you wish (from SoCal(amity)).

WOW...I am completely blown away by the gorgeous pics...that lettuce...and the brug...and the snow...roc...that is some pic and mtn...wow...wow...you guys are certainly in a winter wonderland for sure in October no less.

DB just sent more photos but midtown is not that pretty in the snow LOL. He is moving to his new coop on Tuesday. Hopefully the weather will be all better by then and the movers will have no trouble.

I hope you all keep power ! XX fingers crossed

    martha...you are too sweet !! Need glasses :) c

Just saw pics from the storm on the news--Central Park closed because of so many broken limbs, streets impassable in some areas of the storm. I can't believe that after getting through a very nasty winter, this one seems to be starting early with more of the same! Stay safe and warm!

More picture please! I am so vicariously thrilled by your storm.

All the tropical plants and lettuce are gorgeous and the view from marvil's kitchen looks like a movie set. It all makes me want to run Venezuela. We were fortunate as it stopped snowing here early last night. But New England got socked,

    Here's how crazy it was. 7:30 a.m.

Just three hours later at 10:30 a.m.

Here's what kept us going -- Lulu Peyraud's lamb and tomato stew with potatoes and baby turnips.

The area where our new house is being built got hit too and we lost a few trees, but no other damage, thank goodness. One tree splintered and fell, thank goodness, because if the whole thing had come down, we'd have lost the new master bath! The power is out there though! Hoping the new floors aren't affected by the fact it's getting really chilly in the house!

Driveway impassible. Now we have to walk up the entire thing!

beagles, you need to find someone with a chain saw and get a log splitter for after. That's good firewood next year.

So glad nothing came close to the house.

I think my fiance's dad's going to cut up the trees into firewood. We've already gotten about 7 truckloads from all the trees they had to take down for our house and driveway. It was a VERY wooded lot!
