Kitchen Overhead Light Suggestions Please

Hi,

I know this is a longshot, but I'm wondering if anyone here knows of a light fixture that I'm thinking of. Haven't actually seen it before, just think it might look cool in my space.

Anyways, on to details. I'm redoing my kitchen and will have a long galley style. I don't want to do only pot lights so I was thinking of some sort of light fixture hanging over the middle "isle" that was a good 5 feet long or so.

Problem is, it can't hang too low from the ceiling because I have 8 foot ceilings and I'm 6'-6". And it can't be track lighting (or flexible track lighting). Also can't be a flourescent fixture. If anything like this exists that doesn't cost multiple thousands of dollars, can someone please let me know?

I guess it would be similar to something that might be used over a dining table, but not hang as low. Also want something that is easy to clean since it's in a kitchen.

Again, any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

wow - that's a tall order! (or a short and long order actually). I think the height is going to be an issue - but here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling...

Shades of Light - Jetson Island Chandelier (only 6in high) or Italian Quadrate Chandelier or Big Wave Shell Chandelier

Restoration Hardware - Their rectangular shade pendant is neat but comes to 21" with rod so that one prob won't work..

I think I know what you mean. OMG the first one I found on lighting universe dot com was $1500! I suggest bring a photo of one you like to a lighting store...I had best luck when I made an appointment first with a residential lighting specialist. She prepped catalogs before I got there and I loved what she picked. Prices were the same as online and it was so nice to have a professional's advice.

Maybe cross post to the GardenWeb Lighting Forum and although there are fewer people viewing it, an expert might know just the thing for you.

Some of these say they have mounnting height flexibility with mutiple pieces shipped in 4 inch lenghts.

I think you're looking for an ''island pendant.'' Use that term to search on the lighting websites (lightinguniverse, bellacor, csnlighting, etc). The challenge will be finding one that satisfies your height issues.

Another possibility would be a row of small flush-mount lights, which would meet the height requirements more easily.

Thanks a lot for the responses thus far. I'm not even sure what to look for at the lighting sites since there is so much selection.

I guess I forgot to mention what sort of style or finish we're looking for in my original post. A stainless / brushed nickle finish would be best since it will mathch the stainless appliances and stainless or chrome faucet.

I like the idea of the Jetson Island one in terms of being supported off of a couple of wires, but I don't like the "shade". I would want something that light can shine through. Downlighting is what I'm trying to avoid since I'll have potlights for that.

I like one posted above with the nickle frame, but it hangs too low (also a bit too pricey... :) )

I looked at Restoration Hardware earlier (thats the only lighting site that I can go to without being overwhelmed). I like that rectangular shade, but I'm worried it would get grungy after a few years.

Anyways, thanks a lot so far. Hopefully someone can point out the perfect light for me.

So I was just checking out Pottery Barn and found something that I like. Not sure if my wife will like it though. The bulbs can be spread out throughout the space with varying distance from the centre. Cool idea.

Went to CSNlighting and searched 'island pendant'. This one has a much better price @ $358. I can't tell how much you can adjust height.

The second one has 4 inch stems so it has to come down 8 inches from ceiling.

Thanks again for the leads sueb! The second one (Hinkley Cirrus) is a possibility. The minimum height is 11.5" which should be fine. The outside is a hard backed fabric though. Cleanability is my only concern. I'll run it by my wife. Thanks a lot!

You can also check out Rejuvenation (which is having a sale right now!)---they do many of their lights at custom heights, so you could figure out exactly what works.

I didn't read them all but a search for Pool table lighting might help you.
