Do any of you remember my "dancin on air" thread about a year ago? My marble counters had just been installed, and I couldnÂt contain my gladness. Well, my kitchen is finally complete enough to share pictures now. And honestly? IÂm way too spent to dance on air these days, but my gladness lingers. My kitchen is finally complete enough to share pictures. The folks on GW and particularly on this forum  you know who you are! - really helped steer me (and often were like a "safe port" when I needed one) to a kitchen that really works for us. How can I thank you as I need to for the advice and guidance and welcome hand-holding?
After a long eight months of research and planning, we broke ground on our 400 sf addition and nearly full-home renovation on July 1, 2007. The new build was completed in November, and interior remodeling is mostly complete but still ongoing. ItÂs really just all the details, not important enough to mention. We enlarged our kitchen space, added a great room, office and second floor deck off the master bedroom. We updated all three baths (still in varying stages of completion), installed new flooring throughout the house, and gave ourselves a completely new kitchen. We tore out most of our hardscape in the front and backyards, poured some incredible textured stamped concrete, and replaced more than half of our furniture. We went from a cramped and outdated house to a home we can enjoy in our future retirement.
We worked with a builder but I opted to leave him out of the kitchen entirely (a very good idea). We were fortunate not to have major problems that couldnÂt be resolved, but he left a bit to be desired in the details. I didnÂt work with a kitchen designer. I went to numerous kitchen showrooms and found cabinets that I love, and was lucky enough to find a supplier who worked on the minutae with me until we got it right. My husband was a dream. I heard him tell a friend not long ago, " ÂYes, dear was my mantra." We spent more than we intended, but not as the result of extravagance. Cost over-runs were in things like engineering fees, four beams instead of two, oops-look-what-we-found, and hardscape expenses that couldnÂt be deferred. There were, of course, a few "while-weÂre-at-its."
Some of the specifics:
- Cabinets are Medallion, cherry in a pecan stain and maple painted black (not distressed)
- Cararra marble counters (those of you who know me, know how much joy the Cararra gives me)
- Stainless appliances, sink, brushed nickel hardware (I'd be hard-pressed to remember the manufacturer, but I'll be glad to look it up if you have an interest
- Backsplash glass tiles by AlysEdwards (custom-made in Italy). This was really the last major detail, and one that got me hung up for a long, long time. I wanted something lovely but didnÂt want anything to steal the show away from my Cararra. IÂm anxious for you to tell me what you think.
