Hey vince! Looks great! I was going to email you to find out how you were doing. Saw Brian last week. He said your kitchen looked really nice. I agree! Hope you're enjoying it so far!

Wow, your subway tile is impressive! The whole kitchen is marvelous. What is the period of your house?

Your little butler's pantry is cute.

Thanks, the house is an early 20th century center hall colonial. The original kitchen was removed in the early 80's, so we aimed to bring over a somewhat period style/form to the space. The small butler's pantry (with the wall sconce) is original and we brought over some of the design features from the area. Subway tile is italian porcelin (not authentic, flat subway tile), but we needed some dimension so we opted for a slighyl beveled tile. We opted for porcelin tile for the floor as well, as it's much easier to keep clean than wood (in my opinion) and just feels more durable and appropriate for a kitchen (at least given my experience).

Beautiful! I like the color of the floors-it really warms things up. Everything looks well-placed. What color did you use on your walls? Thanks
    Melinda

Thanks, the wall color is benjamin moore "nantucket fog" (light gray/blue color)...

Just beautiful and refreshing looking!!! Love your faucet...and everything else! Wonderful job!!

Wonderful! Understated, elegant, clean, and still homey. Love the floor tile...We almost used that for counters!

Beautiful!!! It all flows together seamlessly and looks very elegant and sharp!! Be very proud of all those many many decisions you had to wade through!!!

That's a very nice kitchen! And DIY on top of it? You have every right to be super pleased! I'm especially loving the backsplash tile. Did you encounter any special problems with installing it? Seems like I heard somewhere that beveled subways are a challenge. But from what I can see, they look simply marvelous in your kitchen!

DIY! I am impressed and envious...beautiful work, enjoy!

You'd have every right to be proud, even if you hadn't DIYed it!
It came out just lovely and classy. The faucet really makes the look IMHO.
I hope you enjoy many happy meals in your new space ;)

Yes, a beautiful homey workplace yet classy and elegant. And it sets off your views out the windows so nicely. This is a DIY?!

    Wow, a very pretty kitchen!

Thanks! The faucet was worth every penny (http://www.rohlhome.com/pdf/U4719L_U4718X.pdf) - the build quality if excellent.

The tile backsplash install wasn't too much of an issue, just need to make sure spacing is accurate and consistent. The tile on the floor is great, hides dirt well and feels great on bare feet!

DIY was tough (but had some very skilled family members) - contractors make me feel uneasy.

LOVE IT! Your kitchen is an inspiration for me. Look that clean look.

You give me hope! We plan to start our kitchen and do most of the work ourselves, too.

    Beautiful job!

I just love your kitchen! You did a beautiful job. I think all the details make for a timeless, functional, inviting space. I especially like your cabinet hardware and, of course, the faucet! Enjoy!

    Vince 25:
I have a question re the Perrin & Rowe bridge faucet w/side spray. The link said the side spray has mixed Hot & Cold water - but the spray hose is only connected to the cold water side. Do you know how they accomplish this seemingly impossible feat? I ask because I like the Rohl bridge faucet but it doesn't have a side spray. TIA

Great looking kitchen, very nicely done.

    Hi Tia,

Thanks! The bridge faucet I installed does have the side spray. And you know I never even noticed if it's mixing hot/cold through the sidespray (I'll have to check later in the day). I'm thinking the bridge must be bringing back the mixed water to the sidespray. I"ll get back to you.

Horton Brass for hardware (cabinets): http://www.horton-brasses.com/products/kitchen

(latches are best value: all brass construction, good quality internal mechanism, etc.)

Beautiful kitchen! I can't believe it was DIY. I love your cabinet pulls and latches....they add a lot of character and the subway tile really looks great.

Well now that you're done, and it's up to a quality level I'll accept (ok that means it's stunning) I see no reason why you shouldn't have time to pop up to Alaska and do mine! In fact I'll fly you first class....NOW!!!! Are you game? heh heh

Very beautiful! Enjoy your new kitchen!

    I LOVE your kitchen!
I'm glad you posted your cabinet hardware source, I thought it might be Horton Brasses. Can you please tell me what finish you chose for the latches/pulls? Polished or brushed, nickel or chrome?
Thanks for sharing the pix and info, and congrats on completing such a great project!

    Beautiful job!

Horton only does Nickel and not Chrome on items. We ordered Rejuv fixtures in Chrome first (because I think chrome is more historically accurate then Nickel ). Anyway, they match very well although they are different materials.

Another tip is not to order oversizes latches and drawer pulls, this takes away from the cabinet itself and kind of makes things look out of whack (from a size perspective). I've seen so many wonderful cabinets ruined by huge hardware...

Just picking up on another thread on the forum regarding timeless kitchen design. I have to say that for us one of the biggest goals with our design was to create a simple and timeless kitchen. We feel that we achieved that look, but at the end of the day, sticking with the "timeless" kind of philosophy usually leads to a:

    - a very functional kitchen
    - good material choice (and hopefull long use)
    - good re-sale value

Which I think every person wants...

Hi Vince! Great job on your kitchen! I really like how you built in your little Cadco - it looks really great and I know you will use it alot.

Wonderful job! Great choices. Enjoy your beautiful new kitchen!

Your kitchen is beautiful, Vince. Congratulations and enjoy!! I am embarking on a partial renovation in mine, and the look will be similar. I am unsure about mixing "metal" finishes. I have my heart set on a shiny Perrin and Rowe bridge faucet.. either polished nickel or polished chrome. Which is yours? My cabinets are white. Wall ovens and dishwasher have black front (not getting new ones). Sink will probably be stainless. Blue pearl (blackish) granite on counters. I am getting a stainless vent for my new cooktop (Wolfe, 4 burner, gas). Never had a vent before and not sure which brand to get. I want to get cup pulls and knobs for the cabinets. Re my preference for a shiny faucet: what do you think I should use for the cabinet hardware? (I am confused as to what you ended up getting for your knobs and pulls/latches - what material and what finish?)Do you think shiny faucet (chrome or nickel), stainless vent and sink, satin nickel cabinet hardware (or brushed ohrome or stainless) will be OK? I'm afraid to do polished pulls for their tendency to scratch/show fingerprints.

BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! You have my range and hood. It looks great. Mine will be installed within the next 10 days.

A lovely kitchen--so clean and crisp looking with just the right amount of wood tones. Enjoy!!

You achieved your goals. This is one of the most elegant kitchens I've seen in a long time. Simple and understated probably describe it too. White has always been my fav. Beautiful, beautiful!

Lovely! It's like a breath of fresh air! I bet you really enjoy waking up to your new space every day. And I so agree with you on the "timeless kitchen design" - it always works and is gorgeous, too - a winning combo. :)

Your stained cabinet at the end of your counters is a great addition and adds another lovely focal point, besides the stove and sink. We are doing something similar only it is more of a hutch look, probably out of walnut like the island top and some open shelves on another wall. It's good to see how well it works in someone else's space. Very inspiring!

I wish you many years of happy memory making in your beautiful new kitchen!

Love all your choices, it all looks great! It is simple and not fussy overall yet also not stark, with the traditional cabinets and nice detail on the crown molding. It's nice to see what height you hung your Brightwood fixture vis-a-vis the window trim - I've got the same one on order with different finish and shade. Just hope when mine comes, I got the measurements right and it hangs down to where yours does. You've done a fabulous DIY on this timeless, traditional kitchen. You ought to be very proud (I would be!).

What a wonderful reno! It's a perfect blend of timeless, classic beauty and functionality. I love all your choices. It truly is a feast for the eyes! Bravo!!!

Thanks, everyone! I'm really flattered by all of the nice comments.

villagebetsy , the pulls and latches are polished nickel. The faucet is polished nickel. While the fixtures are polished chrome - I thought it would be an issue, but unless you're inches away from all the components and then do a quick compare, you can't tell the difference.

I think I ordered and hung the task lighting 31 inches from the ceiling.

    Vince:
Sorry to be so dense, but what do you mean by chrome "fixtures"? I know your vent, stove, etc, are stainless.
And your cup pulls and knobs are made by Horton Brass, right?

Just wondering (since I keep tossing ideas around in my head and keep changing my mind about what to do in my own kitchen).... what made you choose the polished nickel over polished chrome with so much stainless in the room? I am so torn. Chrome is the most durable, and I'm thinking now that maybe instead of polished nickel I should just go with chrome for everything (both polished and satin/brushed). (I know nickel has that pretty yellowish tone and chrome has a blue tone -which is colder, but perhaps not noticeable once the whole room is done.) Thanks to everyone who has responded to my question. You all have made me see that there is no one right way to do it.

Great looking kitchen! Congratulations! It is so well done! I love the sink/faucet combo. Thanks for sharing resources. Is the Shaw sink white or biscuit?

thanks! shaw farmhouse sink is white. i was going to do all light fixtures, hardware, etc. in polished chrome because it is period approproate for our colonial ,however after purchasing fixtures in polished chrome, Horton did not have polished chrome latches and pulls (but only in polished nickel, so bought those).

Beautiful! I love the color scheme!

    Hi Vince,
Can I ask which size latches you used on your cabinets? I find the HB small latches a bit difficult to operate but afraid the larger ones are too big for cabinetry.

    Hi Sjay,

I went with SL-4: butler pantry latch , overall size: 1-9/16" x 1-13/16" . The other size is, as you said, a bit large for kitchen use. The SL-4s are very user friendly and don't appear too big (as some latches offered). Unless you're a seven foot giant with big paws you'll be fine! Good luck.

    Thanks Vince,
I think what makes me indecisive is that my butler pantry has latches closer in size to the larger HB latch but agree it does look to large on doors. I had found only one other latch (elsewhere) that was slightly larger than the SL-4 but they cost about $40 each!
How did you determine the placement of the latches on your doors? My current butler pantry cabinets have the latches about a 1/3 of the way down the door but there are no drawers above the door.

we have cabs that extend all the way up to the ceiling (9.5 foot) and we measured about 1.5 feet up from the bottom of the cabinet door. However, I think the position of the latch is dependent on your cabinet door height, so this is relative.

our old butler's pantry (from the 1920's) has slighly larger latches and the position of the latch is a bit higher up than our kitchen door).

    good luck

    Vince

hi vince - may I archive your kitchen in the Finished Kitchens Blog? If so please submit the FKB Category Checklist. Thanks!

Here is a link that might be useful: Finished Kitchen Category Checklist

    Lovely!

Vince- now that you have lived in the kitchen a while, how are you liking all thoses latches? I 've got to decided soon whether to go with latches. We have a few in our bathrooms and I don't find them bothersome. I absolutely love the look. Thanks!
