Sink setback?

How far is your undermount sink set back from the front edge of the counter?

My KD told me 4" is standard... but it came out to 5-1/2"... was teh 4" not taking into account the granite lip?

I want to make sure it is not too uncomfortably far back to be leaning over into... it is a 9" deep undermount also.

The base cab is bumped out to 27... it seems like they set things farther back than we expected... I do have the tilt out drawers in the front... I wonder if that had something to do with teh setback?

Mine is set back 4" from the edge of my countertop, in a bumped out 27" deep sink base with a tilt out. The sink is 9" deep, undermounted in 3 cm granite. For me, the 9" sink is pushing it as it is. Another 1-1/2" set back would be quite uncomfortable, and possibly lead to me hitting the inner edge of the granite when washing large items due to the extra reach involved.

Ours is 4" and I wish it were narrower (had thought it would be 3 1/2", our granite guys usually do 4 1/2" supposedly, so I guess we are lucky). I am constantly whacking my elbows on the inner edge of the granite while washing stuff (esp since they made the reveal more negative than I wanted--supposed to be flush with a "hint" of negative to completely cover the rolled edge at the top of the sink rim--I whack myself on that little lip of granite all the time!).

Our standard is 4". With larger sinks we sometimes have to move them forward to a 3 1/2 or 3 1/4 inch setback. This is only done when absolutely necessary. 4" should work with most standard tilt out trays.

    Thanks for the feedback.

My KD told me it would be 4"... the guy from the granite fabricator told me 4" when he came out to template... then when it arrives it is at 5-1/2". It actually looks like it is a combination of larger set back & larger overhang in front of it... the overhang is 2" from the cabinet frame (about 1-1/2" from tilt out drawer face). Should I ignore this or is this significant enough of a mistake that I should ask them to fix it? Will I regret it after a few months of leaning over the sink?

Also, the ONLY seam in my whole counter top is centered on the sink... I thought that with an under mount sink they do not seam right at the front of the sink. With the window right behind the sink, this is the MOST visible place it could have been placed! Looking straight down to hardly see it... but from any other location in the kitchen it is plainly visible with the light angle!

When they drilled the sink hole for the main faucet, they centered it on this seam behind the sink... that would have been great if the seam was exactly centered... but it was not... so my main faucet is about 3/8" off center of the sink drain. Which means it is 3/8 off center of the window mullion behind it.

Also, what is the standard overhang? My island is rectangular... and the overhang varies around the island from 1-1/2 to 3/4" from the face of drawers... not sure why... this should have been templated and it should be more accurate than that I would think!

I always have to keep asking myself if I am being too picky or not... Please tell me if I am being too picky with these items or whether I should be telling them that it needs to be redone.

I don't allow our overhangs to vary more than 1/4" throughout the kitchen. 1 1/2" overhangs are pretty much the normal overhang used by most fabricators. Unless there is a specific reason for the 5 1/2" setback, it sounds like a mistake was made by the person that laid out the cutout. I am not a big proponent of seams at the center of the sink, but I have done it when the layout of the cabinets made this the most feasible place to put it or at the customer's request.

So, anyone out there who has a sink set back over 5"? Will this be uncomfortable using on a daily basis? My back get sore leaning over a sink with a 3.5" setback... I really need to decide whether this is worth pursuing... I am 5'10... my wife 5'4. 9" deep undermount sink. >5" setback problem or no problem?

I can't believe the difference that a farm style sink made in how comfortable it is for me to wash dishes.

I suspect that in counter sinks came about not because they were any better ergononically, but because they are cheaper to produce. The narrower the space from you to the sink, the better.

jscozz, I think you have a combination designed to give you backache: The deep sink, plus the tilt drawers in front, plus the overhang. Your KD should have warned you about this when s/he designed the kitchen. It is a bad design and your back will pay.

dmiller... when you say 1-1/2" overhang is standard... is this from the cabinet frame or from the door?

I have looked at tons of photos now online, especially marble.com, and it appears that almost every undermount sink in granite they show is set back more than 4"... more on the order of 5-6". This is just using crude graphical measurements and visual guesses... but they all appear to be set back as far as mine... now I am more confused...
