Finding a wall...

I have a new layout that I tried to address to previous comments. What do you all think? I had to remeasure everything scrupulously accurately because I just kept running into problems.

bmirepanic: I'm going to comment on your critique and how I addressed your points here ~

I like your point about making sure there's a "setdown" opportunity beneath the passthrough and glass cabinets.

I think the depth of the bay window won't make cleaning it impossible... dunno; I am not averse to setting the sink/counter further back though. I didn't draw it that way here.

I think my friend's criticism about the wrong side was that we all have a gradient of favored glasses, say. Those most-used get placed closest to the outside of the cabinet (closest to the washing up zone) as they go in and out most. But if you want it from the opposite side, you won't be able to reach it. However, I don't think that's relevant to dinner-dishes/glasses that need reaching from either side. These would be similar so the favoritism problem wouldn't really figure, I don't think.

But this reminds me that I'd like to make a beverage center and I've modified my plans a tad to reflect this... see below for the alternate plan.

Trash would go in the island under the prep sink (if I use one). Recycling would go in the pantry-space that will have a tall shelf for keys and mail-dumping. I NEED a recycling bin *immediately* underneath such an area. As far as I'm concerned, .99% of what comes through the mail should go straight to recycling without ever passing go. I would be happy with a recycling container right at the mailbox. Heck, perhaps I should just mount the mailbox on the top of the recycling bin ... hole in one. :)

I think this design isolates the dry storage less; it feels like more of a big room with a slightly L-shaped kitchen...

Does this plan mitigate the sink-in-the-U problem? I think so, but I can't think through it as clearly as you...

Can I get away without the additional expense of the prep sink? I hear y'all that it's valuable -- is it invaluable?

I'm of the get-most(but not all)-things-from-the-fridge tribe. Mind that doesn't make me organized, just compulsive -- they're different. But it does mean I like a ton of fridge-side space, both for grocery-unloading and cooking.

Oddly enough, I spend more time day-dreaming while doing dishes than prepping. I suppose it depends on your procrastination-preference. I tend to pay attention when I have a knife in my hand, and not when there are stacks of depressing dishes keeping me from other things.

Views ... I guess things are oriented a bit toward the bay window and laundry walls, not the FR. Maybe I could play with the shape of the island? I'll wait to see what you-all say first.... I played around with making the island extend more toward the sink so as to orient me more toward the FR while working, but I can't get that to work...

Thanks very, very much for any and all comments.

This layout would require an island hood -- are they a lot more expensive than wall hoods? Probably...

I'd center the sink in the bay window. When standing there, you'd feel less stuck in the corner. Remember that the DW has clear countertop above it and visually doesn't have the prominence of the sink.

There might be a bit of a problem doing so because there's a water outlet stuffed in the corner where the bay window goes which takes up space. But I've changed this with a deeper, 27" counter which might then make room to center it...

I made the upper a little deeper; don't know if that's a good idea...

Actually, that makes the corner over 3' from the right angle of the cabinets. And I bet that bay window just might get too deep to clean with 27" counters... so not sure how centered I can get the sink without deepening things too much...

Is there a reason you have 5 to 5 1/2 ft aisles around the island within the workspace? We have 4 ft aisles to the sides of our island in a very busy, multi-cook kitchen and I think they're plenty big. Any bigger seems to lose efficiency for me. We have 3 ft aisle between the island and rangetop which I like for an easy turn back and forth between stove and prep area.

Moving the sink to the right (centering it) allows you to have a lazy susan corner cabinet.

The wall uppers are drawn at 18" deep...Is that the plan or a mistake? I've had as deep as 15 1/2" without a problem but 18" seems like it might reduce the comfort while using the counters underneath.

I've had uppers over an island, and they kind of make the space seem more closed in and crowded. Do you need those?

Not sure I'd want the counter to drop off right behind/beside the cooktop area...I'd be pushing things off the edge.

    Thanks rhome!

There's no reason the passageway is that size except ignorance; I really didn't know how much space to put. I noticed buehl had drawn 48" distances so I was using that as a guideline. I'm sure this is a known quantity, just not by me... thanks for the corrections.

Ditto on the depth of the uppers: I'm just ignorant! I will reduce their size. I hadn't thought about the ramifications for movement along the counters beneath. [this is how bad kitchens get built; someone mentioned that figure to me once so I went with it, but I dunno...].

I tried to lengthen the area to the right of the cooktop but perhaps it isn't enough still. With another mention of code not permitting windows anywhere close to the hood, I may have to bite the bullet and just lose that window behind the range. I'm guessing the hoods designed for walls are cheaper than island ones too, so that's another reason to align things as you have.

Unfortunately the wall the island is attached to must stay. And I sort of thought the wall would look cool there anyway. That was an old thought from long before recent iterations of this plan, but the necessity to keep the wall now remains regardless of desirability. I prefer not to even wonder if it's what I want; it's there, fbow.

I'll rework and report back. Thanks, rhome.

Oh, sorry! I was confused about the island...Didn't realize that was a wall. Duh.

If you lose the window by the range, and you like my layout, the range could move away from the dw more to the right.

See you that plan, and raise you this one! Believe it or not, its a version of yours.

Reminder not to have the glass fronts be so deep (more like 14-15" and less like 24") that you can't reach everything from both sides. Does the passthrough exist right now? Is that wall structural? Cause its very tempting to expand the passthrough area and make a feature out of a longer passthru with the top and sides lined with glass cabinets.

Hi bmorepanic -- that passthrough does exist right now and is currently longer than it shows on the plans. I guess all my plans posted so far don't show its current, large, random size. Which is .. 6'9" . I didn't show it but currently, the distance of the wall behind the fridge is 47.5" and the wall near the bay is 29", which from 13'1"leaves 6'9" (unless I've done something wrong).

I can draft that out with all youse-guy's ideas in mind but not for a couple hours. I'm kinda in trouble at work... (wonder why).
