2x4 herringbone comes on a mesh much easier to install:
I have a picture from online: tile guy : should know if he is experienced:

google: herringbone 2x4 mesh: several pictures on the web.

~I hope this helps. Mesh is the way to go!

bee, forgot to mention... prior to tile guy's arrival I took some masking tape and figured out approximately the size and location for the herringbone pattern then laid the tiles out on the kitchen counter in the pattern and just overlaid the stick liners so that he could see what I was after. He figured out how to run the subway tiles so that they would be equal on both sides.

Thank you both!
I have not seen the herringbone on mesh...I will look into that.
The photo is especially helpful and is exactly what I am looking for!

Thanks so much...your kitchen looks beautiful!

Mamadadapaige,
What is the tile you used for the backsplash? It's absolutely beautiful.

thank you! it is by walker zanger. color is bone china and it is in their Gramercy Park line.

Wow beautiful kitchen! A few questions:
How long did it take to get the tile?
What size grout line did you use?
What color grout did you use?
Is the tile glossy or matte?
Thanks

oh, thank you!

the tile was in stock so it was just about a week to come from their warehouse to the tile store where I picked it up. I had the tiles butted right up to each other so the grout lines are as small as can be, maybe 1/8". I think I used TEC Birch for the grout... was going for a bit of a cream/gray combo to pull in the cream steaks in the counters/tile and gray in the stainless appliances. It is a fairly glossy tile with a crackle finish. I will post some closer up pics below:
