Cross Post - Does this rug work with dinnette

I also posted this in Home Decorating. I value everyone's opinion so I wanted to post here as well.

This is the casual DR set I may purchase. The brown rug on the right is one I found today and the store let me borrow it overnight to see how it works. Since I don't know how to Photoshop the set onto the rug, you'll have to overlook the white rug in the DR pic which I got from the Internet.

I plan to incorporate color in this room via window treatments, pics, and decor, all of which I do not have yet.

What do you think of the rug - honestly? Does it work? The ceiling light is one I found on-line that is a contender along with the linked one.

Thanks.

    I like it.

    But...

If I were being nitpicky I might prefer a more organicly shaped light fixture with it. Something with a little more swoosh.

Of the 2 lights, I definitely like the pictured one over the linked one. It echoes the curves in the rug. It could have a little more 'swoosh,' but it has enough to work.

As for the rug, I like it and it goes with the other colors nicely...if you want the monochromatic color scheme. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with monochromatic, but would want to see the addition of some other colors into the room...They could be on the table or hung on the wall, or in other ways than through the rug. This rug will add interest to the floor without detracting from other decor in the room.

The rug "melts" into the floor providing visual texture. I happen to like that look. It's got a soft natural contemporary feel with the table. I much prefer the second light as it's a bit more "urban" and the first light (on my monitor) looks like satin nickel which I wouldn't pick with your other choices. Your table has straight angular lines, especailly with the X back chairs and the 2nd light goes wth that. If the rug had contrasting colors I might not pick it for your table and it's lines but with the muted monochromatic scheme, I like how the swirls just soften the base.

I'm going to backpedal. Remodelfla has convinced me about the light fixture. I looked at them with the rug without regard to the table, and didn't notice the color difference. I do like the brownish tone better, and do like the pattern of the arm arrangement with the table and chairs. I like how Remodelfla said the rug 'melts' into the floor. That's what I meant when I said it matches, but gives interest to it...It's like it's part of it, not a separate element sitting on top.

Brown floor, brown rug, brown walls, brown furniture ...

The furniture looks nice but what matters is that you like that style of furniture. I tend to like a much more spare style but that is immaterial because it is, in absolute terms, an elegant style. But seriously! do consider changing the rug to get a bit more animation in there. It feels just too brown. RH has some rugs in that same style in various colour options that could look very nice in there while breaking up the monotonicity-of-brown.

'sfunny, I'm all about monochroma but I think you need the right colours to be able to pull that off. Monochromatic brown is very heavy and very despondent. You need to have huge windows and loads of light to make an all brown room look alive.

    Just my $0.02.

You might consider changing the fabric on the seats and brining in the contrasting color in accesories and window treatments. It all depends on what elements you want to have "pop". Do you want the color on something that would bring your eye up or draw it down?

Mindstorm - the wall color is by no means brown. It's actually a creamy butter yellow. As for furniture, I'm not into the elegant style of furniture; my style is more laid back / casual which is what this furniture portrays. Beause the rest of my first floor is done in this casual style, I need to keep the dining room the same especially since it flows into my newly remodeled casual kitchen.

The color will come into play with curtains, furniture accents, pictures on walls and things like this. When I'm done with it, it will not appear monochromatic that's for sure. I love color and plan to incorporate red in there along with whatever else works.

debi, I'm sorry my post was unclear: I didn't mean that *my* furniture style is elegant (it isn't; my style is extremely spare - elegance doesn't get a chance to enter the picture!); I meant that the furniture you've included above is elegant - not stuffy but still refined.

That said, the walls may not be brown but the yellow you describe is what I'm factoring into the monotonicity above. All the browns you have up there are the yellowish brown - all of them. If you had some rich mocha browns or some rich red browns, that would keep the foundation colours in your room contained into one part of the spectrum if you like that, but still have some life. As such, the elements you have aggregated thus far are dominated with the yellow-browns which I'll submit are a bit jaundiced.

If you look at the furniture picture you've attached there - the much lighter (cream?) rug and the similar cream seating makes that photograph look much lighter, happier and alive than when you incorporate that into your room with the carpet and floors you currently have. Neither of which are objectionable mind you; but I really think that with the lot of them together in that room, it just doesn't look entirely thrilling.

I'm not objecting to the furniture, btw; I'm saying that you should get a carpet in a different color.

Just my $0.02. Sorry if I offended or if the comments aren't what you'd prefer to hear. And BTW, if that's the case, you have your answer! What you put in to your house must please you and if you object to someone's assessment then you know that you've found something you like ;-)

I tend to agree with mindstorm-much prefer the lighter rug with table and chairs although the rug is beautiful.

Those of you who'd consider putting a white (or nearly white) rug under a dining table are braver than I! ;-) Besides the staining factor, the rug in the photo connects too much with the plain, light-colored seats to me, and emphasizes them, which I wouldn't want. I think the colorful accessories will make the room come alive and it will all work. But the existence of differing opinions is why all our homes don't look the same...Thank goodness!

sigh! Mentioned the white rug to show how the different setting in the attached picture has a much more pleasant and airy aspect compared to the one I see with the rug the OP is testing in her picture. I thought it self evident that that you wouldn't put white carpet under food - perhaps I presumed too much. Chocolate brown would do just as well at breaking up the sea of yellow-brown - NOT that this be construed as an endorsement of chocolate brown, either, although I rather think it would look good there! Rather that that rooms needs another majority element in there to lighten the tone in that sea of (yellow-)brown and not just a couple of - or worse, more! - flourishes in different colors.

So what's your recommendation for the seats? Let me guess, pick a colour from the carpet ;-). 'Sfunny, when I put that room together, it was the lighter seat color that kept me from dissolving into a puddle of tears in that brown room.

squirrelhaven was kind enough to Photoshop the set right onto the rug. Though the warm wall color is off in the photo (it's actually creamy, butter yellow), the pic gives a good representation of what it would look like. She also found a great light fixture that lends a warm feeling.

I like the rug and I like it with the dinette set...good bones. At some point you will need to replace the light colored fabric on the chairs. You can pick up a color from one of your accessories. Are the chairs comfortable?
