Do you want to maintain a vintage look with a simple black and white tile pattern? I'd think smaller, maybe 2x2's or less... herringbone pattern? Or something along those lines.

I like Remodelfla's idea! It would look good with the tongue and groove, the range, the counters and the hood.

If you want something a little funkier, penny rounds would also look good, in a white that goes with the range and cabinets, and maybe pulling out a few and replacing them with stainless.

I like the herringbone idea; hadn't thought of that, or using stainless tiles as an accent... Both would look really good I think.

What do you think about doing herringbone and using a gray that had a metal look to it?

If you find a gray, metal look or not, that looks good with all your other finishes, why not? It won't look like steel. But gray because you like gray should be fine.

I've spent the afternoon reading through the kitchen forum posts and looking at pictures of back splashes and am now considering a solid slab of marble for the back splash. I live about 5 miles from a major marble quarry so I think it would be quite possible to get a remnant piece that would work. Would I need to have this professionally installed, or is it DIY using some sort of adhesive? Would it look weird being paired with a black laminate counter top?

I think that white marble with a little black or greyish veining would look really nice.

BTW, I have the same stove. I've been very happy with it but am looking forward to induction when I remodel.
