I love them too. however, the ones that I have were planted before I moved into this house. They grow in front of a brick wall on the patio. They grow too large for the space. I have tried to keep them cut to 4ft tall until its time for them to bloom but that may be harming them. also in the spring, I cut them down to the ground because all them limbs are dead wood. can some tell me how they care for these bushes?

My 80+ year old aunt says to do this...After the first hard frost kills the leaves, trim the dead wood back to 6" or more (to almost ground level) and mulch very heavily. Any mulch will do (I use a heavy layer of pine straw or whatever I have). Next step is to be very patient. Last year mine didn't start leafing out until about mid-June. Pull back the heavy mulch when the weather is warm, late April or early May, but keep mulched around the base of the plant.

Before the frost kills the plant, you can take cuttings from the tips and root. They root easily in water and then keep these plants in soil inside during the winter. I usually keep one over winter just in case mine doesn't return, but mine has always come back.
