Searching for the Perfect Grey

Hi Folks,
I am looking for your experience and ideas. In my beloved 100 year old four-square, I have a terrible yellow foyer that I meant to paint out as soon as I bought the house (oops, that was 7 years ago now ;-) But, I have been planning my colours and gathering my art and chair, AND looking at a million grey colours. The plan is to paint the front foyer grey with a crisp white trim, and to stain the stairs a bit darker shade, probably a dark walnut, and I love cool based colours. I am testing CIL Snowfield #00nn 72/000 W/B (the lighter shade in the pic) and CIL Silver Quill 30GG 61/010 W/B (the darker shade in pics).

I am checking the colour appearance at various times of day and exterior weather conditions (the foyer is in the front and the house faces southeast right on the water with almost no trees or any other light restrictions). I am finding that both grey colours that look so cool and light on the slips are taking on a very blue look. I am wondering if maybe all the yellow on surrounding walls is making the colour appear bluer than they really are, and that if I paint out the walls with a great white primer to eliminate the yellow and 2 coats of paint, I will get that cool neutral grey I am looking for. Or, should I be looking a different paint line or a different shade.

I just thought someone else on here may have experienced the same issue. I will paint this 10 times if need be to get the exact colour I want, but I'd like to avoid that time, expense, and frustration.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Nona

Yeah, I'm sure it's the yellow making that happen. That Mineral Ice is very nice!

We had the same issue and we solved it by choosing a warm grey. We used BM - Rockport Grey in our foyer and hallways. And BM - Chelsea Grey (50%) in our living room. Good luck!

We have recently helped clients's in the past year with selecting a grey paint- my personal favorite is called Aloof Grey- Sherman Williams- this is in the green family- it seems grays in the blue family came out blue instead of grey & I wanted it to look grey not blue.

While the contrast with the yellow does affect one's perception of those paint samples, they will both "read" as blues rather than grays even without the yellow next to them. They both have substantial blue undertones. That isn't necessarily bad, but it doesn't sound like it is what you want. Try a "warm" gray with beige undertones.

Thank you everyone for the great suggestions and feedback. I have a list of 7 new grey shades that I am going to sample right after I get back from vacay! I'll update with before and afters once I get my painting done early in February.

If most of the light during the day comes from the south, what you need IS blue in the gray to cool off that light and reflection from the water. I just think you are not going dark enough. Try BM Gull Wing Gray. It looks great with brown which you have in your woodwork which will warm up the cooler gray.

Just a suggestion from what I did since my dilemma is exactly as yours...
I primed a huge section of my YELLOW walls and tested a few grays for my bedroom since they all were coming out blue hued on top of the yellow and the surrounding yellow was tainting my sight.

I sampled SW Passive ( had a nice silver tint), SW repose gray (perfect soft gray), BM revere pewter ( too beige for me). & Valspar Gravity ( just blue)

I picked repose gray - SW

I think you should keep with a lighter gray since your trim is a little darker - it will make it pop!

And to add to that, I have BM's "Pale Oak" on my walls. It's a light, warmer light gray-beige (but when I hear the word "beige," I think of drab, so I'm going to say gray).

Pansy Cra, thank you, and I think you are right. In thinking about it after your message, I thought, "I am going to prime the whole foyer anyway, why not prime now, and then sample my potential colours to get a much truer read of the colour." Thanks for the idea and the inspiration. I hope you love your grey when all is said and done.
