I am thinking the same in my kitchen, there will be many people that say don't paint but if you want to, do it, just suggest if you paint look into a professional and get several estamites it could surprise you.

thank you. yes, definitely professional painter and quality paint. Don't want to ruin them! I'm not a fan of white cabinets, but we have a wrap around porch and the kitchen is dark as a result. Need to lighten it up.

Is there any money in the budget for new doors and drawer fronts? Even with paint, the cathedral shape on those doors will date the room. You should be able to get slab mdf replacements relatively inexpensively, and it will totally change the look of the room.
Also - is there ventilation for the cooktop?

Will have to add a new vent for the stove. There's so much stainless steel in here, we thought that might be ok to just have the one vent cover above the stove.
Interesting idea of painting the uppers a different color than lowers. Getting bids for painting soon, don't know the cost yet vs replacement of the doors. Good point on the style of cabinet being dated no matter what color! Hmmmm.... love the thoughts! Keep them coming. :-)

Since you said that you wanted something light for your countertops, here are some options for you: Colonial Cream, Colonial Gold, Kashmir Gold, Giallo Ornamental, Santa Cecilia, & New Venetian Light. They are mostly all in the warm tan color family.

Also, since you said that you wanted to change your island, how about making the island countertop different from the permiter? (That is, if you do not paint the upper & lower cabs different colors.)

One warning about painting. Since you have oak cabinetry when you paint you can usually still see the grain of the cabinets coming through.

If you are going to paint the cabinets anyway... you might also look into taking the door fronts to a professional cabinet maker and ask about cutting out the bell top and matching the router edge. You could add some glass to some of the uppers that way as well. If professionally painting, I would putty the drawer pull/handle holes and replace with new. I love my single pull upper door pulls, instead of a 3" or 4" pull.

I would pay to have the cabinets refaced and put on new doors. The cathedral style panel doors, especially on the bottom cabinets are very dated.

The cabinet above the refrigerator does not look accessible, and is the corner tambour used? Is there a pull-out waste? The investment of an updated design and new cabinetry may be a wiser use of money.

I like olldbobbi's idea of painting the cabinets, and dugnell's idea of replacing some of the doors with a more updated look. I particularly like bobbi's idea because you could keep the gray tile. Is it good enough looking to keep? Gray is very "in" now.

By the way, you certainly need to get rid of those angled countertop edges! Way last century!

Have you thought about putting wainscoting on the back and sides of the island? Would add some dimension and interest.

I think cabinet refacing would be an affordable option and more durable then paint. Talk to your local Granite Transformations.
