I just want a feel for your plan here.....are you trying to make it disappear? Insulate that space? Make it a pretty place? Would you have it covered all the time or open it each morning?

K considering that your living room has navy blue in it I would do either a navy blue curtain or one that has pattern with navy blue in it.

Is this door used often? Cause if so I would say that a curtain would make it worse.

A drape would be to awkward to move every time you want to use the door and look a little odd and since it is so close to the kitchen minimal fabric is best as to not retain cooking smells ......

I think the reason you are having a hard time picking a fabric is that the idea isn't all that sound. That one picture is cute, but there is a reason it isn't widely done. It looks weird. A nice little roman shade or pull-backs would really work better here. That being said, I'll look for some fabrics. You should mirror it in the other windows, maybe in a roman shade.

I just would like to pretty it up but also maintain privacy in the morning and at night. It would be an added bonus to keep drafts out at night.

Here is a suggestion.

I would go with drapes mounted from the ceiling to just the floor. Use grommet top for ease in opening & closing. Ikea has many very reasonably priced in good sizes & color selection. They even have insulation panels to attach if that is what you want it for. You could probably use only one of the panels as they come in pairs. I would get either the color of your wall or in navy.

I think it is worth a try, since you have your heart set on it. Yes, ceiling to floor and insulated and easy to move.

Ikea also has room darkening or privacy panels. I understand your need completely. I have a Dutch door with a window on the upper half. I live in a very cold area in winter & since the door has a split in it and the windows aren't dual paned It gets very drafty. Also it is on the west side of the house & in summer it gets very hot & bright light coming in is glaring in my eyes while I'm 3 feet from the door on my computer. I am sorry you have had to wait so long to get any dilemma help.

I like this fabric. I gotta say, though, that that inspiration pic is in a shabby-chic home which yours is not. I think that might be what is working in that situation. Embrace your door - don't hide it!!! A simple roman shade in plain blue to match your living room with white gross grain ribbon would look elegant and fabulous. See pic below.

I'd tie in both the red from the kitchen and the navy from the LR. Something with a print that includes both.

I like the idea of the blackout roman shade which would give you complete privacy at night, but there is no logical reason to do anything except have it made to cover the glass insert of the door.

I love tying in both the blue and the red. I'm just having a hard time finding a curtain with the right shades.

If you are wanting it for privacy then what about changing the glass insert to a beveled glass? Then you'd still have the light coming in. We did that with our front entrance.

But. The curtain you have there is so grossly inadequate that I can see why you are going in such a dramatic direction. You may be so thrilled by a proper roman shade that you never think about door drapes again.

That door is in your kitchen? A curtain like your inspiration picture is in a front entry. A curtain like you want will only get in the way and collect dust and grease in a kitchen. I also think it would be a fire/safety hazard to cover the door that way.

My Dutch door is in the kitchen. I would not mind putting up a drape for the same reasons as yours.

Ehanback, I think raebella will need grommet tops. Those you posted are gathered on a thin rod & will be difficult to move back & forth when needed.

I have a stackable woven wood shade neutral color, in my kitchen, similar door.....the Shade Store is a good source, (outside mount)..

Do you have drapes in your living room? If the plan is open as it seems, then I suggest matching (or carefully complementing) those.

You seem to have plenty of wall space to the right side of the door, and since the hinges are on that side, I would suggest putting up a curtain rod that is wider than the door with a curtain that could be pulled all the way over to the right completely past the door when you want to use the door. An insulated curtain with both blue and red in it would not only keep drafts out, but would coordinate your two rooms and give you total privacy. I might use some of the same fabric over the kitchen sink either as a full curtain or as a valance to tie the two together.

Organizedsarah, that was exactly my idea! I was going to push the curtain all the way to the right when I wasn't using it. Then it could also bring some color and interest to that empty corner. I'm still having a hard time finding just the right curtain though!

To dress the area up, you could paint the door black (or not), add a bamboo blind and a narrow wooden bench (add wicker baskets underneath) and maybe hooks above. To help with drafts, there are kits to seal windows...we used on our greenhouse style windows and it's amazing how it cuts down on the draft and you can't tell there is plastic on them. To tell you the truth, in my mind anyway, drapes are not going to look great and may end up being a nuisance. [houzz= [houzz=]
