the dabbled sunlight in the pic .... makes it hard to focus on leaves ....

It looks like black pearl to me. The dark foliage and round peppers match the description and the red color should have changed to black/dark purple as they ripened. It's a cool pepper to grow. I have to see if I can dig out some pictures I took the year before last.

Mine looked like yours in July of 2013 and then looked like this picture in Aug....The peppers got a little bigger, but rounder and rounder. A unique plant, more upright than I expected, but really loaded with peppers. What's really cool is that it reseeded very nicely, but I didn't notice til June of '14 or so (our Mays have been really cool in the last few years). Then when I went out to transplant, the bunnies had whittled them down too much to make it worth it. My pink linai verbena reseeded too and I never expected that to happen. I plant that little patch around my water hydrant and wellhead so I do get some surprises sometimes.
I do remember thinking the same thing about the red peppers on a black plant. The leaves on mine started out less blackish, but that changed when it got really hot. Hope yours got blacker too. Will you plant them again? They are really intersting against tmy yellow heliopsis.

Yes, that is definitely Black Pearl. Called pearl because the fruit are shaped like pearls: round. You can save seeds and they will come true from them, at least for the first year. If you do, wear gloves. The fruit are very hot! It is one of the very best ornamentals for our area.

Ginnier that looks great next to the yellows, nice combo. I'm going to try and grow it again from seed someone gave me. I had no luck last year, but maybe second time's the charm!
