Perhaps no one has had this happen. I think it is pretty rare but very annoying and I'm not sure if it is conditions or something in in the genes.
One clone of Cattleya aurantiaca was prone to this and I put a cattleya Hybrid in the the bin. Cannot remember the hybrid name as it was some time ago.

Thanks for the response Arthur. The self-pollination issue if very, very annoying. I read this kind of self pollination (before the buds open) is an adaption resulting from a lack of natural pollinators.

For now I will just keep the plant to see if I find someone who wants an interesting plant that will never fully bloom. Come spring it may be in the trash. So sad.
