It is probably a convenience thing (Without knowing the NPK of Osmocote) I'd say it would be fine provided you do not have many plants.
With a large mixed up collection it is easier to spray them with liquid fertiliser and you can easily vary the formula between seasons.

Nutricote is better than Osmocote because it isn't as temperature sensitive as Osmocote. The Osmocote can blast in temps over 85 degrees and release all the fertilizer.

There is a generic brand of Nutricote but the name is escaping my memory right now. Big Box stores usually carry the generic brand.

On occasion you will still need to add a fertilizer in addition to the pellets that have the needed micro & macro nutrients in it.

i have seen a lot of dead plants... not orchids mind you ... where time release has been the problem ...

you might think of them.. as a time saver .. but they are so easy to screw up .. i suggest.. that unless you have duplicates of everything..

its a very long way.. of saying.. dont mess with success ...

I do both. Osmo 2 times a year - Spring and then after long hot summer. Throughout the growing season I add water soluable to captan for disease control and systemic insect if needed - If you don't need these controls than it is best (for me anyway) to actually spray the water soluable. I water well the day before the spray day - hydrated orchids are strongest - Put a little squirt of dish soap and tabls (1 per gallon of spray) fertilizer in tank sprayer and saturate away concentrating on bottom surface of leaves as well as top surface and roots. This past year I have also added a small amount of minor elements (Thrive), You use just a small amount.
This has worked well for years.

I have my way. I've seen dozens of healthy vibrant collections all fertilized differently. And overall culture be different and successful.

Not all growers succeed. Most do that give the effort. Most in our club use Maxi-crop. A seaweed juice that is a root stimulant. Works great. You can see the difference. I started adding Magi-cal. That helps too.

But if what you do works, why kick a sleeping dog?
