Because the buds are present during the cold season, some or all buds in a cluster can be damaged by mold and/or cold. Plus, it's marginally hardy.

The buds are slightly fuzzy. Thus they are easily "moistened" by rain, dew or even snow.

Perhaps it needs to be moved to a more protected site.

Thank you Jean. What criteria of areas would be considered "protected?" Right now, the plant is slightly under a maple tree. It gets winter sun all day, yet only gets morning sun in summer.

"Protected" will require a site that's warmer, possibly drier, than the rest of your garden.

Mine was near the southwest corner of the house, and about 8 feet away. A bit closer to the house would have helped even more because of an increase in reflected heat from the house wall.

"Protected" will also include a buffer against seasonal winds. Possibly even temporary shade when temperatures soar.
