Experiment

Hey winter sowers!

I did a little experiment last year that I thought some of you might appreciate hearing about. I read that Lauren Springer uses the old English method of sowing seeds in quart containers in a garden box with some wire fencing material over the top (to keep critters at bay). I have gobs of saved quart nursery containers, so I tried it.

The results were that the seeds in my covered containers (mostly milk jugs) germinated and grew much better overall.

One thing that I did not do with the quarts that Lauren does, is cover the seeds with fine gravel or grit.

Of course, there can be many factors here if we are getting scientific, but for my purposes I have enough evidence to know that having a covering works better for me.
