Thank you for the background info that is interesting and I am so glad to see this with the potted plants the one I saw was a pallet and they used tumbled glass as the filler? and I was wondering what else can be used in place of the glass and also do you know or have any experience with Hugelkultur Beds?

In all of my SIP designs, there isn't any Filler in the water reservoirs, the reservoirs are used for Fresh Water, or a Water/Nutrient mix.

There is a solid corrugated sign material called Coroplast that seperates the water reservoir from the Soil-Less media mix.

The water is wicked up into the Soil-Less mix to within 4-5" depth from the top, This is the area that most plants feeder roots are. No Evaporation, No Leaching. All the water is used by the plants feeder roots. KISS design principles.
