Your 2015 wish list

Okay. I'm sort of ashamed to admit that I've already purchased two items from my 2015 wish list plus an extra today (hee hee).

Here's what I've ordered so far:

Mandevilla laxa (I had this a few years ago but managed to kill it right before it bloomed...no!!! I've always wanted to sniff it and see if it does indeed have a vanilla or gardenia like scent.)

Philadelphus mexicanus (This tender mock orange is supposed to have a strong spicy orange blossom scent, some say it smells like tuberose!)

Clerodendrum trichotomum (Finally a plant I can grow in the ground and enjoy its jasmine like scent!)

What's on your wish list and why?

-Robert

I want a Double delight rose and Jasmine molle for my container garden. I wonder how they would do in a container.

I already have 3 bush roses, 1 Jasmine- Belle of India elongata and another jasmine in pots.

Double delight is a 10 foot monster in my yard lol.
I want a michelia alba. But one that isn't 11 feet tall and $100.
    I'd love to bonsai one.

I have tried mandevilla laxa from seeds and as a bought plant and killed it too robert! I tried some seeds last week as well, I hope third time is lucky.
Ok, so here's my wish list for the new year
    hundreds of fragrant orchids
and some replacements for previous dramatic losses:
    hamamelis mollis
    viburnum carlesii
    michelia alba

I hope everyone gets and is successful with their wish lists.

I received my Philadelphus mexicanus and am thrilled with how large it is. About 17" wide and 11" tall. I hope I'll be able to sniff it next year.

Fenius, let's hope we're both successful this time with our mandevillas. :)
Mine was doing great and was just about to open some blooms when I thought I was over watering it so I cut back and the poor thing just croaked. Laugh.

    Re: hamamelis mollis, viburnum carlesii

I've had Hamamelis moonlight (intermedia hybrid between japonica and mollis), and I found it much less fragrant than H. vernalis (my native), though certainly prettier. I've never tried pure mollis, though I've read it's suppossed to be the most fragrant. I love my witchhazels.

Viburnum carlesii is so strong that I planted it by my bedroom window and for the most part, wouldn't open the window because it was too much...during blooming period. I still loved the plant, but I now feel that perhaps near a walk or entryway would have been a better siting.

Thanks for the input dbarron, I know most mollis hybrids are not supposed to be as fragrant as mollis, I think I read the best among its hybrids scentwise was pallida (which I had also killed some years ago btw) while some others may even not have any scent at all, especially the dark colours..

Hi, got a potted double delight few days back. I wanted to know if older flowers lose their fragrance, as mine seems to be doing so

For scent, you can't beat the native H. vernalis, I can always tell they're in bloom for quite a long distance, due to the fragrance on the air, even out in the woods.

Woo hoo! On a whim I decided to google Rosa 'Sweet Chariot' and came across a site, High Country Roses, that had them in stock so I ordered two.

I've been reading about this miniature rose's awesome old rose scent for some time now on this forum but could never find a source until now.

Guess I can scratch another one off my wish list. :)

Pelargonium gibbosum amazing night scent, Boronia megastigma need i say why :P and michelia chapensis one of the best fragrant michelias and i have tried all the rest :P

Dang you, Brian! I've been wondering about Pelargonium x glaucifolium's night scent and here you go and tempt me with P. gibbosum.

Why is it that although there is no way I can squeeze another tree into my garden, and it is outside my zone, I am madly googling how I can buy m. chapensis??

Ha! I did the same thing, Maggie. ;)

    I am sorry :D :P

great minds think alike, eh Robert ;)

Btw if you see mini rose 'Sachet' - grab it. I was quite fond of 'Lavendar Crystal' but it was sometimes not that vigorous. Tried 'Sachet' last year (described asone of the most fragrant mini roses) & she was amazing. Here she is already fully leaved out while all the other roses are just budding (which has me a bit worried)

Ha! You're just as bad as Brian, Maggie! Laugh.

Okay. Had to order Sweet Chariot so Sachet will probably be the same but I will keep a look out for it. Thanks for the heads up!

And of course, now you've got me thinking about 'Sweet Chariot'
    This forum is dangerous!

So happy that I found a nursery in Oregon that ships up here to Canada, and eagerly awaiting shipment for:

    Rhododendron occidentale

    Rhododendron 'Candy Lights'

    Calycanthus 'Aphrodite'

(*also possibly calycanthus 'Venus' to replace my destroyed-by-fighting cats" plant)

    Gardenia jasminoides 'Summer Snow'

    Magnolia figo var. skinneriana

    Abelia chinensis 'Ruby Anniversary'

    I dream of
    Lonicera fragrantissima

DAPHNE X LAWRENCE CROCKER and Clethra probably pink spires

Robert you'll love Sweet Chariot. Mine has two flushes. And that's probably because they are in part shade :-) The whole patio smells of old rose.

Brian have you grown Pelargonium gibbosum?

No not yet that is why it is on my wish list :P

    Obviously ;-)

I went to Lowe's and got another bag of Casa Blanca lilies and some Lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis). I cut a hole at the top of the bag and partially wettet the peat and placed them in the fridge to force them. :)

Found a new one to add to my list

Clematis Fragrant Oberon "A brand new introduction which is reputed to be one of the most fragrant Clematis to date"

Brian, don't start me on clematis. If they say very fragrant that must be true. Whilst you're at it add a x Rubromarginata, Mandshurica, and Sweet Summer love for later fragrance ;-)

These posts always get me googling, sometimes only to be met with the despair of a zonal reality check;)

Meanwhile here is my first arrival of the year. Yay!

    Gardenia 'Summer Snow'

On second thought, maybe keep Oberon in pot & overwinter in garage? Hmmm...food for thought...

    last modified: 11 years ago

I didn't find anything about Fragrant Oberon's zone. Why do you think you can't grow it?

Update: I checked. It seems Clematis cartmanii are better suited for zone 8. Though maybe in a sheltered spot, they will thrive :-)

Yes, do it. You must get Sweet Chariot. I came out of lurking just to endorse this variety. :)

Burlington Roses also has this variety. High Country Roses is an excellent source too.

I'm at that point where buying anymore is going to be a burden. So one in one out is the rule now and preferably petite plants. Just waiting on those orchids to fully croak any day now and reusing their pots for some tried and true plants. Hmm thinking about some Parma violets again. These are easy but I lost them to no watering.

    True Blue,
FYI lonicera fragrantissima is being offered by Canning Perennials this spring. I've been looking for this one for quite a while so pretty excited to finally find it. Just thought I'd share.

Thanks a lot chouchou. I saw they have a nice selection of speed wells too :-)

lonicera fragrantissima is a excellent plant for winter fragrance on a sunny winter/early spring day the fragrance can waft around the garden

Hey, what luck! I was able to rescue a 'Sweet Chariot' after trying with no success to order one. My sister is moving & mentioned there was one in her garden. Unfortunately it was a bit neglected but is not looking too bad after I took off all the dead growth. The poor buds are a bit wilted as it's a bit warm to be transplanted. It's recovering in a shady spot & seems to be drawing water.

Ps. It is a bit of a sprawling monster for a mini

Awesome! Congrats! The ones I preordered didn't make the cut so I'm probably out of luck this year. I also killed my latest Mandevilla laxa so I should probably give up trying this one. ;)

Oh no! Well, you know, one should never give up:)

We've been having cool weather and of course as soon as I transplant this rose, it shoots up to 25. So even in the shade, the little buds are all droopy despite my constant care. Might lose this first flush. Oh well, as long as it survives, I can prune properly for next year

Robert did you write to Burlington roses. They might have Sweet Chariot :-)

Ha! You're such an enabler! ;) No. I haven't tried them. I did find a source for Maggie's 'Sachet' which I'm tempted by. Laugh.

Apparently they are specialized in Ralph Moore's roses.
Anyway, either they have it or not. If they're out of stock then you can get Maggie's Sachet, if they have it, you can get both :P

    last modified: 11 years ago

Which one is Maggie's Sachet? There are at least 5 on HMF....

Sorry. It's the top one that Maggie posted a pic of in the Blooming in May thread. I'm tempted to order one since it's supposed to be very fragrant. :)

Thanks Robert for showing me, which one.
    Nice selection.
    One question, though.
    Only one rose?! (Lol)
