Whatcha got blooming?

11 years ago

It's dark and gray up here in the Pacific NW. No hoya are blooming, the trees are bare, and my garden has died back for the season. I have a few spring plants juuussst showing their green tips, but other than that, everything is pretty much naked, bare, and dreary.

On the plus side, some of my Paph. orchids are blooming. I thought I would share, just in case anyone else needs a bit of a winter pick-me-up:

Paph. 'Odette's Vision':

{{gwi:2118709}}

{{gwi:2126396}}

Paph. 'Venus Night':

{{gwi:2118711}}

{{gwi:2118710}}

Together:

{{gwi:2126397}}

Paph. spicerianum (just opened):

{{gwi:2126398}}

A bunch of my other orchids are in spike/near bud opening, as well.
So, what does anyone else have blooming?

    Great blooms, everybody! I love these flower threads, especially in the dead of winter!

    None of my hoyas are blooming now (a few are in bud), but there are some flowers, mostly on orchids.

    Potinara Izumi Spirit:
    {{gwi:2126400}}

    There are 3 flowers (one is hidden behind another here):
    {{gwi:2126401}}

    (This is sort of cheating because it's not my growing; I just bought the plant at an orchid show in bud, and flowers opened just a day or two later).

    Dendrobium âÂÂEastern Vigorâ has been in bloom for 6 weeks now, and it shows no intention to stop:
    {{gwi:2126402}}

    Phalaenopsis no id (this one had no roots 18 months ago!) Two identical plants, each with two spikes:
    {{gwi:2126403}}

    This Cyclamen has been blooming non-stop for more than 15 months now! Dormancy schmormancy!:
    {{gwi:2126404}}

    African Violet I've propagated form leaf 10 months ago is blooming for the first time:
    {{gwi:2126405}}

    Hoya carnosa 'Rubra' buds are playing a supporting role. This will be its second blooming. There is another peduncle growing there on top!

    I might have posted these tiny little dainty adorable flowers of Dischidia ruscifolia before, but hey, it's been blooming for months now, so here ya go again:
    {{gwi:2126406}}

    Same goes for Ceropegia woodii. It's been blooming for months now; started blooming just 5.5 months from cutting.

    Aurora, I didn't even think to check my Epi for scent. The two that have bloomed for me have no scent, so I guess I assumed Epis were scent-less!

    Thanks, Doug and Jan! Beautiful Cattleya, Jan! I love ruffled lips.

    Speaking of diverse blooms, I love when orchids grow together with Hoyas because Hoyas bloom and grow actively in the spring / summer, but orchids often bloom in the winter, so there is always something happening to keep me entertained.

    That pot. is beautiful, greentoe! And that Ceropegia woodii is stunning! Those leaves! Jan, is that a cattleya or cattleya hybrid? I have never seen that color! Gorgeous!

    The pic I included in this thread is my Phragmipedium 'Fireworks'. Her "streamers" will get much, much longer.

  • 11 years ago

    > Her "streamers" will get much, much longer.

    And it's multifloral, right? With 3, maybe more, flowers per spike. Looks amazing. I love that long question mark shaped dorsal sepal.

  • 11 years ago

    Yes, this is a multifloral. I lost the first bud due to a curious foster cat, but the other two are just fine.

    This bloom above I think this might be Dendrobium Kiyoshi izumi x Jacquelyn Concert Hybrid.

    Got a few more in bloom:

    Paph. delenatii:

    Paph. delenatii and Paph. NOID (P. holdenii album 'Riverbanks' x P. holdenii album 'Top Hat'):

    Paph. delenatii, Paph. NOID (P. holdenii album 'Riverbanks' x P. holdenii album 'Top Hat'), and Phap. 'Venus Night' , plus another budding. Didn't check the tag on the budding one:

    Dendrobium 'Royal Wings':
    (flash on)

    (flash off)

    Odcdm. Sunlight 'Pesky Panther':
    (with flash)

    (without flash)

    And last, just a few days from blooming (I hope), Hoya burmanica:

  • 11 years ago

    Beautiful orchids, Aurora! I love the fuzzy Paphiopedilum delenatii in particular. It would be in serious danger of being nuzzled to death if I was near. :-)

    None of new orchids are in bloom for me, but one most anticipated spiking is Monnierara Millennium Magic 'Witchcraft'. It's spiking out of season, and the seller actually told me to expect nothing out of it for that reason, but the spikes are both growing, so I am hopeful.

    The blooms on this one are gonna be black! bLaCk BlAcK BLACKKK!

    A few hoyas are blooming though. (Right, back on the topic of hoyas) Hoya diptera IML 0261:

    Blooms opened in a more yellow/white, but then the yellow intensified over a day or so. Nice scent.

    Hoya acuta pink:

    It was collected by Carol Noel in Sabah, Malaysia. Blooming just 8 months from cutting, on a peduncle that is just an inch or two under a 4xT5 light fixture - VERY bright in there, as fluorescent grow lights go, and warm. Acuta has been renamed verticillata though, so I guess that's what it is now. Nice strong scent for the first few days, then disappeared as blooms matured.

    P.S. Love how multiple photos can now easily be posted!

  • 11 years ago

    You will have to post pics of that Monnierara when it blooms! My diptera lost it's peduncles when I rooted it, but I expect that over the summer, it will put out lots of new growth and a peduncle or two. As far as renaming, guess I should do that with my acuta, as well. And my amoena/pallida/whatever they are called now.

    Yes, I agree, it is a lot nicer on this site, as far as posting pics go.

  • 11 years ago

    Great photos!I have a few as well.Pubicalyx 'Chimera' and H.dennisii showing different bud development.Should open any day now!

    Nice job aurorawa!Do they have any scent??

  • 11 years ago

    No, no scent, but they form peduncles at every node, and the leaves have a very nice shape and color. Plus, I think this is one of the few hoya that can tolerate frost. Not to mention, the flowers are quite pretty...

    Jan, those are all so pretty! Ty for sharing.

    Did your sp. Black Leaves come with an accession number by any chance? I have Hoya sp. JJ-PCBR, (EPC 301), which supposedly is just called sp. Black Leaves by some people. If it is the same plant (I will post a pic of mine, which, leafwise, is a deadringer of yours), then your pic of the flowers is the first I have seen, after months of searching for a flower image!

    Oh boy, I've been missing a lot of delicious blooms here, I see. Very nice!

    My brother stopped by with a very fancy camera the other day when I told him a black orchid was blooming, so I have some very nice pictures of whatever was blooming that day.

    And YES, that Monnierara has bloomed!

    Here are a few pics with brightness cranked way up. This makes some flower details visible, but it also makes them look more burgundy and less black than they are in real life.

    People have noticed that the column on this one looks like a dolphin jumping out of the water. It even has pectoral fins!

    Column details from underneath.

    Male flowers of this subtribe of orchids (Catasetinae) shoot pollen forcefully onto the pollinating bee's back when the bee triggers specialized appendage in the flower. Watch the video here: http://www.sciencebuzz.org/buzz-tags/pollination. This is a different species, obviously, but from the same subtribe.

    I think my flowers are all female because I do not see any of those sticking out triggering mechanisms. Have to research that closer. Flowers last 10-14 days at most, very short-lived compared to most orchids people typically grow.

    Oncostele (syn. Oncidium) catatante was also blooming when he visited:

    Flowers were just barely starting to open, and only 3 of them. That spike is 3.5 feet / 104 cm tall, and there are 108 buds / flowers on it! And this in indoors, in New York City. Fricking insane, this plant is.

    Hoya carnosa ‘Rubra’ (syn. ‘Krimson Princess’) was doing its thing:

    And again a lighter version with details but with more washed-out colors:

    Hoya rigida IML 1395 was in bud:

    The buds on the left are in more bright light than the ones on the right. The whole plant is under very strong artificial light ( inches away from 4 x T5s) and relatively warm (close to the ceiling, and with heat-producing lights both over and under). Since then, some of the ones on the right started blooming (nice strong scent, a bit sweet, buttery and spicy), but the ones on the left are dropping! I am not too worried though because first blooming attempts are often rocky for me, with buds dropping, but then if my other hoyas are any indication, they bloom ok after that.

    There are more pics of these plants here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0Bws2Rc2T88zUd25IWm0tVWVVUmc.
