hang a white sheet behind the tree so the light shines back and you will do fine.

do you think i need to purchase one of the higher wattage CFLs or will a 23 W be enough? I have the light as close as i can without the leaves starting to heat up.

If you can hang the light from a ceiling hook and get a larger output bulb you'll do better. If you can hang a hoop with a white sheet to encircle your trees you'll do great

Thanks Steve. I know your philosophies on this, however they don't meld well with my wife's ideas of what i can do in the livingroom or kitchen.

there isn't anywhere for me to go overhead (but if there was, i would still either be lighitng just the tips of the 2 longer branches or the middle of the tree from above - the 2 longer branches are like a V up at 4 degree angles).

My only choice would be a windowless, cool basement, where i may be able to hang them from above. Do you think that would be better?

I am married to and my wife put her foot down and down went the plants to the basement. This year everything is outside in the greenhouse as my wife got tired of basement dirt.
Last years total plant box for citrus, figs, veggie starts, and fresh beet greens.
