Hard to generalize, depends on your particular growing conditions, your skills level, even your climate zone (even when grown inside). I have mine in a basement with some natural light but also cool and warm white florescent. Have four, 48 inch bulbs (the Dypsis is under one of the banks). It does fine, even grows. It does spend much of the year outside though. If your place is dry, watch the spider mites, otherwise, not too much trouble.

Fairly easy indoors. Keep away from heating registers and dry air. Summer outdoors in part shade. Acclimate to sun over 4 weeks or so. Eventually they grow too large for indoors, but you could, I suppose, eliminate the tallest canes and let the offsets grow.
