It's lovely..

I like it. How cold-hardy is it? What's it planted in?

I have started to write about this orchid a few times. Read what I wrote and didn't post.
Greencurls, do you love it?

CooperDR - Not sure how cold hardy it is. It has been growing in intermediate conditions mostly. It is a fairrieanum hybrid so that should give it some cool tolerence/preference.

Arthur - I like the flower, but i am not in love with it. It some shape and color opportunities for improvement. What are your thoughts?

Both Parent Orchids are beautiful, and in making a cross the hybridist should have in mind a result that is an improvement on either one.

Sometimes, I suppose these experiments work out well.

Of course, I am not a hybridist, but I know one and he will only do crosses where an improved result is likely.

Despite any hybridizers best efforts, they can never truly tell what a novel cross will look like until it blooms. You can make an educated guest but that is it. Have read interviews with Leon Glicenstein and Fred Clark discussing their well meaning hybrid disasters.

I am not saying Fairly Sauced is a disaster at all - nor do i think you are saying that. I think the goal behind most fairriunum hybrids are to improve the ease of growth and increase the flower size. Mine is not as nice as other Fairly Sauced flowers i have seen.

Out of curiosity are your comments related to my particular Fairly Sauced or the hybrids in general?

The jargon on orchid lists is speculative cross. I remember buying one of those that had strange ploidy. It struggled along for years but never bloomed.

Found some pics of Fairly Sauced on the net and they were much "better".
You want the cross results to get away from the complex Paph. shape with a few distortions.

Wonder what the hit rate is.

The names in the "Fairly ..."are clever. I remeber trying to decide between sauced and stoned.

The other bud opened and is less distorted so far.

Yes, it is "better" and closer to the ideal complex Paphiopedilum shape. Very nice patterns and markings on the dorsal sepal.
So, despite what I said above, a cross worth making.
