I just read something that said a Vole was also a field mouse. I thought they were entirely different. There's something called a short tailed shrew. I'm thinking maybe this is what you have? I put the link where I was looking...hope it helps...lol...

That looks very much like a shrew. I had them around my yard when I lived in western Massachusetts, especially where brush and leaves were piled up. Unlike the deer mice, which came inside in droves, the shrews never came in the house, but one did best the cat when he tried to mess with them -- clamped onto his lower lip and refused to let go! Fierce!
