Composting Pits?

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, and vermicomposting. I think for the most part I have a handle on what they can eat and what they can't but had a specific question about a few foods that we go through a ton of (due to toddlers).

1. Avocados-are these too fatty? Skins only ok? What about the pits?

2. Mangoes- I believe the peels are OK, but what about the pits?

I have an outside compost bin as well, so it's not like things would go in the trash...

It all depends upon how many times you want to see them again. But yes avocado skins, seeds, and mango seeds are good applicants for the outside pile due to the length of time they take to break down. Even outdoors they may be seen if the piles are shoveled into a new pile. I put them into my indoor worm bin. Cabbage family goes outdoors.

Avocados: The worms love them. The peels decompose VERY slowly, the pits almost not at all. If you have a way to grind them up, even the pits will be eaten.

Thanks! I rarely have leftover avocado flesh :) but occasionally, there is one that goes bad, so they can have the innards I guess. My outdoor pile gets pretty hot, and even the pits break down in a reasonable time outside, but I figured the worms would have issues.

Oh...that kind of pits. I was wondering why no one was talking about digging a big hole in the ground in which to compost.

RayZone, I was thinking the same thing as you.
As far as the pits go I have put both avacado and mango pits in with the worms.....they clean them up really well. The av.pit will eventually start to get soft then the worms eat it up. Any mango pit I've ever put in my bins seem to sprout!
