Refrigerator Compresser Needs Replacement

Hello all,

I writing here first because I just don't know what my course of action should be.

After planning for a kitchen remodel for years it was finally completed a little more than two years ago. Our refrigerator was not cooling properly so we made a service appointment with Sears. We were just told that the compressor is bad on our refrigerator.

I know that refrigerators don't last forever. However, I did think that it would last more than 2 years (3 years if you count the time that it sat in the box in the living room during the planning of the remodel.)

We have a 20 year old refrigerator that we purchased from Sears that we'll have to use. We just aren't in a position to buy another refrigerator.

I'm just really disappointed that Sears put the Kenmore name behind this piece of garbage refrigerator that we purchased. My assumption is that Sears won't do anything to rectify this situation but I'm surely going to write a letter to them so they are aware of this problem.

I'm even more disappointed (and I know it's petty) that when we purchase a new refrigerator it won't match the other appliances.

I'm just really upset and near tears.

You definitely should write that letter to Sears.

I am not exactly sure why you are talking about buying a new refrigerator instead of having this one repaired. Did the repairman give you an estimate?

In the meantime, do you know how long the warranty is on the compressor? You need to check on that because sometimes the sealed parts of a refrigerator have longer warranties than the overall refrigerator. Perhaps you can have it fixed under warranty - you would have to pay something but not as much as you would if it weren't under warranty.

The repair cost was just under $700.00 with parts and labor. I called Sears and the warranty on all parts was one year.

We live in a throw away society. It cost as much or more to repair things.

Do NOT replace the compressor. It may only need cleaning.

Take the cover off the compressor, and with the soft vacuum attachment, just vacuum all the dust off it. When it gets all clogged up with dust, it stops cooling.

If that turns out to be the problem, vacuum the compressor every six months or so.

I feel your pain. My fridge died 2 days before Christmas. It was an LG French door manufactured in 05. I bought it used from a friend about 5 yrs ago.paid about $300. The condenser went. Repair guy said LG has a tendency to leak. The repair would have been in the $600 to800 range. Didn't make sense to spend that on a 9 yr old appliance. There were lots of sales so we checked out the big box stores and Hhgregg. Ended up at a discount place. I now have a beautiful fridge- ( Merry Christmas to me) that's half full because most of the food went bad. The price was over what I wanted to spend but if we leave this house, we will take it with us.
