Agree with Dytecture. A butcher block in an island with no sink... OK. the rest granite, marble, engineered quartz, recycled glass.... You get the idea. A countertop has to be able to withstand heat, scratches, food, etc. etc. It a work surface.

I have a wood edge on my countertops. Can't imagine an entire wood countertop. Wood and water don't mix well.

hem!. They are pre-finshed and dirt cheap but have held up suprisingly well to water, scratches and stains (even red wine). I'm planning on re-applying the IKEA BEHANDLA oil/wax finish every few months.

This is a reclaimed wood bar top we installed. Almost a year in now and still looking just like it did at install. I guarantee it can with stand anything in a kitchen as well as any rock. Just don't be a slob, if you spill something clean it up. I think you would do that with any kitchen counter top though..

We have a cherry island with maple top (coated with about 6 coats of poly). Rest of the kitchen counters are soapstone tiles. So, although always use cutting board on wood top when cutting and don't put hot pans on it, it has held up well. (Note small sink I. Island). We put this in 8 years ago and it could probably use a light sand and reapply of Poly we have been very happy with it!

I've had solid butcher block countertops now for 8 years and still love them. They look classy and are very durable!!!
Definitely do them if you love the wood look! I can even help out with that! Haha!
