Holly Leaves

I have a plant that has wavy leaf margins that curl under. I have troubled myself and the plant trying to find a solution to this strange leaf edge curl.

Lo And Behold, I found a website which posted pictures of exactly that type of leaf edge curl.

The leaf that does that is called Holly Leaf and is perfectly natural leaf shape.

I believe a number of violets released in the 70's featured holly foliage. It doesn't seem popular any longer perhaps because so much focus is on developing show plants & I don't believe these types fit the norm of well behaved perfect leaves. I've always liked the holly type. What is the name of your plant?

It is a noid I grew from a leaf. If and when it ever flowers I will give it a name or half of what I had would all be the same name i.e Noid

. I use it as a surname so I don't get confused. I have Lettuce Noid, Bleu Velvet Noid, MudKnight Sin Noid, and several other of the same family but I haven't named them all.

Just potted up this plant from the mother leaf a few days ago

So does anyone know what a dogwood leaf is? I have seen it a few times in descriptions lately. Of course, with no pictures!

I've heard of dogwood tips on flower petals - am unclear on if it is a white dot, or an indent right at the tip....

    An indent.

I don't think dogwood tip is a recognized way to describe a leaf. It is an official way to describe a blossom (surprise!); it is a slight indent on the petals. Janet Stromborg is a hybridizer who seems to have several of these although none turned up in FC2.

The registered one w/ a photo is a Pittman and the tips are indented and have a white spot.

Tipped Honey (7386) 06/04/1990 (H. Pittman) Double ruby red/dogwood tips. Dark green, plain/red back. Semiminiature (TX Hyb)

Reading through them, I think they may have the white bit as well as the indent although most aren't registered.

(See Karin. No wonder you were confused. We were both confused.)

Maybe I wasn't looking in the right place, but it was my idea that holly leaves were fairly uncommon. Once I had the idea to grow one of every kind of leaf. Holly bit the dust fairly quickly for whatever reason and it was difficult to find. I think that's when I had Dandy Dancer.

Well, a run through FC2 showed a fair number including 2 Allegros but nothing I actually recognized (not that I know every current plant). There is one Russian but I'm not quite sure it really has holly leaves. They might be serrated but that's not the same. There are some errors in FC2 as to mosaic foliage so there could be some as to holly as well I expect.

I have a noid grown out from a rescue leaf so I am waiting to see if the mature plant does in fact continue to have the holly shape with curl. It looks "holly" but time will tell. I would have sworn it was an Optimara Noid because it was BBS, however our local BBS seems to get plants from small, local growers with private collections. Time will tell.

Been reading back posts, wouldn't Brass Band be a holly leaf? There also was a beautiful violet called Christmas Holly I think back in the 70's. Rosie

I don't think so, Rosie. The description I have for Brass Band says 'curly longifolia red back leaves.' And they are "curly" but not with curled edges like AV's with holly leaves I've seen.

Guess I should have looked that up before I said it. I do have leaves rooting of Brass Band and they have set roots (gentle tug test!) and I can't wait to see babies!!! Or mouse ears as this forum calls them! Back in the day they were just babies. But they do look like mouse ears and I can't wait for them to show! Rosie

Huh. Looking things up. I have Brass Band and I got 3 from it. Well it was a good bit of Brass Band and by then I wasn't sure why I'd wanted it so I threw one away. It wasn't until later that I realized that one is dark and one is light. I just looked it up (and again it is not in FC2 except for my entry). It says dark so the light must be a sport.

I saw this on FB but I put the two in a hanging basket and it works pretty well except they need a little more light. (I don't have mice either or hope not.)

There are 2 Brass Bands???? Rosie

Rosie, I think Diana is saying she got one true Brass Band (dark green leaves) from the leaf she started, and one that is a sport as it has light green leaves. So it is Brass Band and Sport of Brass Band.

Diana, have they both bloomed yet? It would be interesting if the flower color was different on the sport as well.

Oh how neat to get a sport! Thanks Anne, I admit I was just more than a little lost for a moment. Rosie
