For my own personal consumption, I plant about 20-25 of different varieties. Half are super hots. I dry all I don't use and pickle a bunch too. If you get good production, three Bhuts should do it 'cause they go a long way. You can jack up the heat of the milder varieties with some Bhut puree too. I had Lemon Drops runnin' outta my ears last year from five plants...

It all depends on the family. One family might only need 1-3 plants, another might need 8-10 plants. And of course, it depends on the plant too, how hot it is and how prolific it is.

Maybe you should ask your friend how much his family eats- and take it from there.

It depends on how much one does with the peppers. If one is growing just to dry for powders then multiples of each plant for thin walled peppers will be needed to get anything of a large amount of powder.

One growing to make jellies will need lots of peppers. If it is jalapeno jelly then that would take a pound or two for making each batch of jelly.

For just fresh peppers then a couple of very prolific plants will have one swimming in them.

Thanks all for the insight. I knew it was a pretty broad question but you have provided me with some information.

Problem is that I did ask and he couldn't comment because they are not available locally.

I know this is another very broad and subjective question that is determined by a lot of factors, some of what can't be controlled BUT if you were to average how much yield you got off each super hot plant in a 3 month growing season what would you guess, a couple pounds?

Personal Consumption is roughly 2-3 plants unless you like to eat them w/ your Cherrios. :)

To answer second question, which is more subjective than question 1 b/c there are SO MANY external factors controlling this. In saying that... 3 plants (Red Bhut) x 3mos, growing in GA, will yield me ~ 600 pods (~7lbs)
