Thanks for your question! I reached out to the designer on the project, and this was her response:

"The ceilings in this design are also only 8-feet so these pendants can work in your space. As a general rule, I like for the pendants to have anywhere from 27”-40” between the countertop and the pendant. The taller the ceiling the more space you can allow. But you also do not want a pendant that is larger in circumference too close to the countertop. So I would say to keep the pendants 30”-36” from the top of your countertop. Hope that is helpful."

The ceiling is pretty enough high 96'' and your island height after counter is 35 3/4 so you have 60 1/4 and you can have minimum of 30'' between the counter and pendant ( UP TO 30'' PENDANT IS FINE )
But another thing is isn't it too big 9' x 5' island for this kitchen ? I think 4' dept is the maximum you can go with

Thank you all so much for your quick replies. Your information is extremely helpful to me, and I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate it. I did not realize this kitchen also has 8-foot ceilings---that's really good to know! But, as far as MY kitchen and the 9' x 5' island size, yes an island that size will work. My kitchen is not designed like the one in the picture. My kitchen is 18-1/2' x 22-1/2'. My sink will be in the island. After measuring my back counters (where my stove top is); the floor space between stove and island; the island, itself; and also the counter stools, I will still have over about 6' of space. My problem is not the depth of the room... it's the height!---Oh, how I wish I had 9' ceilings! :)) Many thanks again!
