Reddit has a Gardening sub reddit and several others in regards to our hobby. Of course it comes with all the bad stuff reddit has to offer too

oldbusy1, I am rolling on the floor laughing. I had to change mine too. It is a long and complicated story, but I already was a member of HOUZZ and a member of GW (obviously) and wanted to use okiedawn for both. Ha! After an hour and a lot of confirming that ended up with them telling me they couldn't confirm me and let me on GW, I gave up and went outside and played in the dirt.

I like HOUZZ so I am giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Y'all know there's always some bugs to be worked out. When iVillage bought GW from Spike, there were some bugs they had to work out as well, and it all ended up being fine.

Lisa, If we have to bail from GW because it gets too frustrating here, I guess there is always FB, which I swore I'd never join.

Mike, I have no idea what reddit is, but I have a feeling it might not be any better than this.

Do you have any cherry trees at all yet? I have North Star and Montmorency. I think Fred had Montmorency when we first moved here, and he always had a freezer full of cherries (and would share them with us). Mine are doing fine, but I only planted them last year so it is too early to know how they'll perform here, and of course, I'm in southern not eastern OK. Montmorency bloomed even before I got it planted, but there were no cherries. It also did well in Fort Worth.

I think that Dorothy may have cherries growing at her place in eastern OK.

I havent got any cherry trees yet. I did pick up a Red Haven peach at tractor supply. I have always wanted one and for $12.99 I couldnt pass it up. I have a list as long as my arm of fruit trees i want. I have the space just not the budget, LOL. I dont understand why cherry trees are so much more money. I love Pluots too and hope to add a couple.

Mike, I wonder if Cherry trees are slower growing and have to spend a few more years at the nursery before they are shipped to the retailer?

Last year TSC had great fruit trees from around late January through April with new shipments ever so often. If you pop in and visit them every week or two, you'll have a nice orchard in no time at all.

I love, love, love RedHaven peach. I think it is the most reliable producer we've had here, and with the largest crop of absolutely yummy peaches--the kind that smell so good as they ripen that you just have to pick one and stand there in by the tree, eating it all warm from the sun, with peach dripping down your chin. Redhaven peaches are, also, the #1 fave of all the squirrels at our place.

Dawn, I guess that could be why they are more. Maybe they are harder to graft. I dont know. I do know that the way BFN, (who provides fruit trees to Lowes and HomeDepot) prunes the trees is terrible. I try to find trees that have branching less than 2 feet from the graft. All theirs for the most part are pre-shaped to be tall and some have terrible shape in general. I like the bareroot size that TSC has right now. 1/2" and only a few feet tall. My orchard is in year 2 and looking nice. If I get any fruit set I may just have to leave one fruit on each and watch it like a hawk to keep the squirrels and birds away. I also may have an issue with Cytospora canker on a plum ill have to address and it appears i had some peach twig borers last fall too. My plan has always been to grow the same peach varieties as Livesay orchards in porter. I figure if those do well in our part of the state for them then it should make things easier for me.

Mike, That sounds like a plan to me. I carefully chose varieties with chilling hours for my area, and still cannot tell if it helped. Our temperatures seem more erratic every year.

I have a young peach tree with massive damage to its trunk. It has been in the ground only a couple of years and a buck beat the tar out of it with his antlers back during rutting season in 2013. It seemed like it mostly healed, but now it is looking awful with a big wound and peeling bark and oozing goo. I don't know if it is worth trying to save it as the damage appears to be spreading.
