Ready for Harvest :o)

Here's what some of the plants look like in my greenhouse beds right now:

Remember this picture from about the first of November:

Those November babies are now very tender greens despite their slow growth over 3+ months. The Asian greens in the south bed may not make it to harvest size before I need to clear the greenhouse and move benches back in, early March.

It shouldn't much matter since the hoop house will go up at that time. I can fill that with the smaller plants. There should be three months of fresh greens before we can get into the frost-free season and, probably, several weeks after.

If'n I'd had transplants to move in last October, my experiences should have been as they were in 2013-2014 winter. That was -- having Bok Choy and such to harvest in December. Instead, I've had a long wait for these from their seedling-infancy, here under the plastic. Waitin' no mo!

Bonnie! The greenhouse greens aren't much bigger.

I don't think I could have started them in December. Nothing happens in there in January.

Of course, clear night skies aren't what those plants want without the furnace being on (like that's gonna happen in January) but I never saw the stars except for once over 6 weeks. This has been a strangely warm winter but with so little sunlight, the plants have not had any real benefit. Colder last winter but seedling growth has been about the same. I just need October transplants!

Lookin good Steve! Hey they may be slow but at least its something.

I wish I had the motivation to garden through the winter months, but, even succession planting for fall harvest is something I'm not good at haha.

Though I did help the wife grow sprouts this winter, does that count?

Spouts, to micro, to leaves, to buds, to flowers. You know as westerners we have a reputation beyond political correctness to uphold.

Yep. I've heard about it from the time I was a kid. You know the story of the hardbitten cowboy, wrongly accused as an outlaw. Shows up in town as a stop along his way -- eats, shoots, and leaves.

I wasn't aware political correctness WAS one if our virtues (with the exception of certain municipalities and counties *cough* Boulder). I always like the "calling a spade a spade" straight talk mentality that comes from our frontier heritage lol.

I do like that though, eat shoots and leaves haha!

The choy sum is gone as is the komatsuna. I was surprised that the komatsuna grew so quickly from seed. Direct-sown seed to harvest from about Halloween to President's Day. Both the choy sum and the bok choy in the picture had about a 3 week headstart.

The bok choy was left to grow a little larger and is holding up well. Later sown bok choy is likely to be moved out and transplanted under the tunnel in March. Harvesting the mustard greens should be over by then.
