Thanks. I am always looking for stuff for my yard that get shadier every year (darn live oaks). Well, that shaved a little bit off of my Gilbert Wilde order for this year.

I am in lee county (z8a) and have had good success with two species; d. exemia and d. spectabilis. they are growing in concrete planters. both of them grow and flower well here if adequate moisture and light shade are provided. have been growing the same clump of d. spectabilis for 10 years. one thing I will say is that it seems to make a difference when you plant them. you will see them in the bulb bins in both spring and fall. i have had better luck in one of those two planting times and not good in the other one. sorry, been so long i can't recall which one works best :-) try planting them at different times.

I have given up. They were such a part of my childhood in Illinois. Many things I miss, like rhubarb. Just try to think of things we CAN grow.

I have grown D. exima for over 5 years. They do well in moist shade for me in north Shelby county zone 8a.

Recently arriving in Dothan from Olympia, WA; they grow wonderfully there. Every year they came back just as beautiful as the last. Plant is about 10 years old. We did nothing to it. I was cleaned up every spring, but needed very little care. Hope that helps. Carol
