Bonding mosaic tile to metal

Hoping for some advice here--planning a mosaic sign for the entrance to our neighborhood, to replace the 60-year-old wooden one that's falling apart, and the original idea was to make a metal frame with a hardibacker insert to adhere the tile to--but ran into a dilemma. Can't find a way to attach the backerboard to the frame. Gorilla glue doesn't stick, and screws into the backerboard edge damaged its integrity....

So now we're thinking of putting a solid piece of steel or aluminum in the frame and using that as the substrate for the tile. Dimension is 15 by 36 inches. Does anyone have experience setting tile on metal? I have seen descriptions of doing it ranging from "no difference from any other surface" to covering the metal with wire mesh and need for lots of specialized materials. Would appreciate any help!

Thanks!
