Any pics or description of the crack?

A 10 inch cracked formed Friday night while cooking dinner. This is behind the cooktop.

tempered glass? bumped a bit or not at all?

That could be the heat expanding the glass beyond it's limits. From your pic, it's hard to tell but how big is each piece of glass? I'm assuming it's something like 3x6? Also, could you stand back and take a little more overall view of the backsplash and the crack, where it is in relation to the cooktop?

I'll almost guarantee you it's not tempered. I've yet to EVER see tempered glass tile. You wouldn't be able to cut it. One of two things is happening here. Either the glass is expanding and contracting beyond its limits because of the heat, or there's movement in the wall BEHIND the glass. Either way, I'm pretty sure this is heat related, because of the location of the problem.

I had the same problem. Mine cracked the same exact way after removing a pot from my cook top stove one week after it was installed. I heard a pop, turned around and saw the crack slowly move from the bottom to the top of the glass. No doubt the glass used wasn't resistant to heat from the cook top. I plan on going back to the glass installer who also purchased the glass used for the project.

I also had this problem. I was boiling water on the stove top and the glass shattered from the faucet on the glass wall to the counter. I was told they used tempered glass. Is this an installation issue, glass issue?

Do a Google search large sheets of can crack because of the adhesive or thinset used. When the products cure they shrink and put the sheet under tension. Think of all the expansion and contracting of it and its surrounding materials and then add a bump or movement and it you can see where it is set up for failure.

Prepping a wall for a sheet like that would take a bit of work and forethought. Looks great but I would say in a working surrounding it is looking for failure.

Starting a new thread on this topic may get more response. Many pro's including myself will often by pass a thread dated years ago. Just a thought.

Fabricator error. Sharp 90 degree corner should have had a polished radius, no matter what the designer or customer said. It was a stress riser that blew.

I agree with Joe that 90 degree corners must be radius for the original post. Ronrap issue is certainly thermal expansion. @cvanheek if it were tempered glass you would not be able to cut it as it would shatter. It is 1 of 3. Low temp, fused or cast.

I am thinking of putting a glass sheet behind my stove. It will go from stove to ceiling, have a pot filler and range hood. I am wondering if installed like this - no adhesive - would this be better? Can I put a pot filler? (It is already plumbed for one...)

We have the same problem....previous owners installed all around mirrored backsplash. Twice now the mirror right beside the stove cracked but i installed the first one that cracked with adhesive. i'm wondering if i install the next one with those little fasteners if that would stop the mirror from cracking. I know it is supposed to expand from the heat and wonder if the reason it cracked was because we used adhesive...and lots of it. if i used the fasteners than it may not crack as the mirror would be looser? Not sure if it would work or not i already have the new second mirror but am hesitating. i'm thinking of using subway tile now. Besides having to clean the mirrors constantly they give the illusion of a larger space and i like that however the subway tiles might be a little more up to date. Thanks please help?
