Wayne, I am the last to say as I got 3 hips this year and 10 seeds. I had them in the fridge for 3 months then sowed them 6 weeks ago and still have nothing. So I will be following closely...lol

Wayne, germination
often varies on whether you're dealing with seeds collected from a modern
hybrid or wild species. Generally, the modern types germinate
when given three months of moist cold stratification. I do the baggie method using
moistened (but, not wet) Pro Mix in which the seeds are tossed into and baggie placed
in the fridge at 4 C, germination usually starts as the three months come to an
end. Some folks will first expose them to two months or longer
of warm stratification followed by three months in the fridge,
species often require such or even a double round of warm and cold is needed. Routinely, check to see if any have sprouted, seeds no not always adhere to timelines and the fragile seedlings can easily perish if left in the baggie too long.

The seeds that I am trying first are from open pollinated Roseraie De L'Hay, the hips were on the plant until early January before I picked them. I have Butternuts that took two years to germinate in the ground and I'm working with one that has gone past that, I might just end up having a snack of it. Thanks for the info.

Hey Wayne! I'm a wild seed researcher in Alberta and I'm afraid if your seeds are wild then you'll be looking at 2 years. For your garden it's much easier to take a few cuttings, dip in rooting powder and shove the twigs into moist sand around Sept-ish. Keep them in a cool garage or basement over winter. I've had luck this way for ~50% of rose cuttings.

Hi lindz6, I am mostly trying to grow from seed, anything!!! Last winter I started Chinese Chestnuts, this winter it's roses, I want see how fast they grow and maybe luck out and get some good plants. I have been reading a bit and this could be a real hit or miss. Thanks.
